Summary

In this position, you will serve as a Litigation Operations Specialist in the Office of Immigration Litigation (OIL). OIL is responsible for nationwide coordination of all civil immigration litigation before federal circuit court of appeals and nearly all litigation in the district courts. OIL is comprised of more than 360 attorneys, litigation support, and administrative professionals. The office is led by a Director, three Deputy Directors, and one Associate Director.

Duties

Help

The duties and responsibilities for a GS-0901-12 Litigation Operations Specialist generally include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Planning and managing office moves, sets up office space for new employees, ensuring assignment and issuance of computers, telephones, cell phones, and office furniture
  • Assisting in the preparation of the Office's current year and future projected operating budgets, providing responses to questions and coordinating with the Office of Management Programs. Oversees internal travel processing. Adjusts completed travel vouchers in accordance with the Federal Travel Regulations, Department and Division policies and routes for appropriate approvals, as necessary
  • Providing assistance to Trial Attorneys in conducting pre-trial examination of witnesses and conducting investigations, including examining relevant documents, obtaining facts, studying legal precedents, and preparing recommendations. Prepares trial documents, as requested
  • Serving as trial coordinator and provides technical assistance and logistical support to trial attorneys during the course of depositions and trial. Independently utilizes and operates electronic databases and trial presentation software in preparation for and presentation at trial
  • Preparing and organizing evidence for production in discovery and for use in trial. Codes and indexes discovery documents using legal case management software such as Relativity, Concordance, and Summation. Prepares summaries of witness interviews, depositions, and meetings with counsel
  • Reviewing documents, depositions, files, and other materials to locate information or documents which are responsive to requests for production, interrogatories, requests for admissions and other discovery requests
  • Conducting factual and legal research, requiring application of a specialized knowledge of law, including case law; statutory law; legislative history; regulations; secondary authorities; and agency and judicial policies, practices, and proceedings
  • Drafting documents, including memoranda, subpoenas, discovery requests and responses, deposition summaries, affidavits, correspondence, motions, and briefs. Verifies case citations and legal references to ensure accuracy in all memoranda and legal documents
  • Liaising with the Division's Office of Human Resources to facilitate administrative tasks associated with personnel activity including hiring, reassignments, promotions, performance, training, work life, departures, and other activities.
  • Carrying out timekeeping responsibilities, ensuring that time and attendance documents are promptly and properly entered into the time and attendance system. Oversees timekeepers' operations, as necessary; as assigned, conducts and arranges training sessions. Conducts leave audits and assists in correcting leave errors

Qualifications

If you are a current or former government employee on a permanent appointment in the competitive service, you will need to demonstrate 1-year (52-weeks) at the next lower grade level as listed in the qualifications below. Time-in-Grade applies if you are in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks. To qualify for the position of Litigation Operations Specialist, at GS-0901-12you must meet the basic qualification requirements listed below.

To qualify for the GS-12 Litigation Operations Specialist, you must demonstrate that you have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 in the federal service performing such duties as facilities management to include coordinating purchase of office supplies and equipment, furniture coordination, and tracking and reporting office space usage; liaising with the Division's Office of Human Resources; carrying out timekeeping responsibilities; assisting Trial Attorneys in conducting pre-trial work; preparing and organizing evidence for production in discovery and for use in trial; ability to track filing and production deadlines, prepare pleadings for filing; reviewing documents and other material for use in preparing discovery requests; drafting a variety of legal documents for trial and track filing and production deadlines.
