The duties and responsibilities of a Public Affairs Officer generally include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Serves as the Supervisory Public Affairs Officer responsible for planning, coordinating, directing, and overseeing ATJ's public information and communications program and team.
  • Serves as a principle advisor providing expert advice, guidance, and strategic direction to advance ATJ's public affairs program goals and initiatives.
  • Advises ATJ and DOJ leadership on communications plans and issues, including ATJ's national communications strategies and plans, budget, policies and procedures, collaboration opportunities, and marketing and dissemination strategies.
  • Reviews and provides expert guidance and/or analysis of all communications products including but not limited to speeches, fact sheets, briefings, reports, press releases, social media content, articles, blogs, talking points, or other working documents related to ATJ initiatives and program activities.
  • Manages the development, design, and implementation of written materials and digital products, and exercises final authority over the style and format to ensure consistent branding and conformity to DOJ style guidelines.
  • Leads and oversees all advance activities for the ATJ Director. Manages the development of communications and event and meeting plans related to the ATJ Director's official travel.
  • Collaborates with DOJ's Office of Public Affairs (OPA) and maintains awareness of all DOJ and OPA policies related to communications, public affairs, and engagement, and ensures ATJ compliance with such policies.

Qualifications

To qualify for the position of Public Affairs Officer at (GS-1035-15), you must meet AND possess the required specialized experience specific to this series and grade you're applying to.

If you are a current or former government employee on a permanent appointment in the competitive service, you will need to demonstrate 1-year (52-weeks) at the next lower grade level, to meet the time-in-grade requirements for this occupational series and grade. Additionally, please ensure to submit an applicable SF50 (please refer to the "required documents" section for additional information).

Specialized Experience: For the GS-15, you must have one year of specialized experience at the GS-14 grade level or equivalent pay band in the Federal Service, which includes: 1) Develops or implements public affairs initiatives that communicate strategic messaging to key audiences; and 2) Provides expert advice or strategic direction to senior agency leadership to advance public affairs program goals or initiatives.
