Help

  • You will serve as a Hydrology Technician supporting primarily complex field work with and supporting Hydrology projects that may involve substantial elements of the work in Hydrology field but requires less than full knowledge of the field. This position involves gathering and processing surface and groundwater hydrologic data related to the Trans-Canyon Pipeline and associated infrastructure construction project, and water supply projects in general, in the Grand Canyon. The incumbent works under the direction of a higher-graded Physical Scientist, Hydrologist, or other higher-graded Science and Resource Management scientist.
  • Collects various types of hydrologic data. Collects stream discharge, sediment, and/or ground and surface water survey data utilizing various devices depending on the conditions present. Measures discharge, water quality parameters, and geomorphologic and hydraulic characteristics. Records observations of fluctuations that may affect the interpretation of the data. Conducts construction monitoring related to pre-construction and implementation of the Trans Canyon pipeline to ensure hydrologic mitigation measures are followed.
  • With some guidance, the incumbent selects sites and installs sampling and field equipment. Operates, adjusts, maintains, and inventories surveying and hydrologic sampling and field equipment.
  • Checks and reduces data to be used for computer modeling and statistical analysis by higher level specialists. Recognizes gaps or inconsistencies in the information; evaluates and compares previous records to develop the necessary changes to correct problems. Conducts non-complex modeling, statistical analyses, etc.
  • The incumbent also accesses and maintains computer records and databases. Inputs and retrieves data, runs programs, and organizes automated record keeping systems. Prepares preliminary interpretive reports relating to individual hydrologic study assignments, including drafts, maps, and other illustrative material requiring judgment and experience.
The National Park Service retains the right to extend the duration of this appointment after selection and/or appointment, based on changes to the regulation governing the number of years term appointments may last. This change, which may be made at the agency's sole discretion and without further competition, shall not be construed or interpreted as the granting of a right to a selectee or employee to such an extension. No extension to a term appointment shall be granted to a selectee/employee to an amount of time that exceeds the maximum number of years authorized under any present or current regulation, unless such regulation expressly allows such action.

Term positions do not convey permanent status in the Federal service.

  • Work Schedule: You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • Trial Period: You will be required to complete a one-year trial period.
  • Travel: You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 10 nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
  • Government Charge Card: You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
  • Minimum Age Requirement: Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-02/09/2023-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience.

To qualify for this position at the GS-07 grade level, you must possess one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:

EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Examples of qualifying specialized experience for this position include the following: 1) the collection and recording of hydrologic data such as stream flow, temperature, dissolved oxygen, specific conductivity and other stream data using a variety of hydrologic equipment (e.g. velocimeters, multi-parameter sondes) in remote settings, 2) the collection and processing of water quality samples (e.g. bacterial, nutrients, metals, major ions, contaminants), 3) hydrologic and water quality data organization and summary and technical report writing.

EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least one full year of graduate level education (18 credits) directly related to the work of the position (i.e. graduate school leading to a degree in hydrology, water resources, geomorphology, geology, etc.). You must include transcripts in your application materials.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.

A Relocation Incentive May Be Authorized for a Federal employee when the employee must move, as directed by the National Park Service (NPS) either through a management directed reassignment or selection for employment, to a different location at least 50 miles away from the one where his/her position of record held at time of selection is currently located, due to a need of the NPS. A relocation incentive is not the same as a Permanent Change of Station (PCS) move and, as such, may be granted in conjunction with one another.

This announcement may be used to fill additional positions if identical vacancies occur within 90 days of the issue date of the referral certificate.

Physical Demands: Field work is an integral part of this position, and may require strenuous physical activity, such as long periods of standing, walking and climbing long distances over rough, mountainous terrain, camping overnight in remote locations, and lifting and carrying heavy objects. Data management, computer work, documentary research and report writing work are sedentary, which entail the ability to concentrate and write for long periods of time in an office setting.

Working Conditions: Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather, including hot, dry, wet, cold, wind, and precipitation. Assignments may be performed in potentially hazardous area including steep slopes, rocky terrain, caves, deserts, and forests and/or in construction zones. Flying in fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters is possible.

Telework: The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval.
