Help

Major Duties: Perform inspections and servicing of pumps, chlorinators, and electrical control mechanisms on water systems with hypo chlorinators. Check chlorine residual of potable water and adjusts chlorine feed rate to keep it within tolerable limits. Must be able to disassemble, clean, overhaul, and reassemble chlorinators as required. Perform laboratory tests to assure regulatory compliance, evaluate plant or system efficiency and for process control and accurately recording and reporting test results to ensure water meets the requirements of the Safe Drinking Water Act and the primary and secondary standards. Perform Bag filter changes, pressure reading and documentation as it pertains to filtration plants while operating, Maintaining, and monitoring, a water treatment system including calibrating turbidimeters, testing for pH, temperature and chlorine residual. Perform inspections and servicing of pumps, chlorinators, blowers, diffusers, valves aeration tanks plumbing and electrical control mechanisms on wastewater systems. Perform lab checks for BOD, pH, dissolved oxygen, total suspended solids, ammonia, settleable solids and temperature of extended aeration activated sludge plants and make appropriate adjustment to ensure plant effluent meets state and federal permit discharge requirements.

Longmire, WA Area Information: The park is located approximately 2 hours south of Seattle, near the communities of Ashford and Elbe. Both are very small rural communities of several hundred people, with some housing available for rent or purchase, convenience stores, gas, church, and an elementary school (K-6). Eatonville (32 miles from Longmire) and Morton are both larger rural communities of several thousand people and have a wider variety of services: kindergarten through high school, licensed childcare, doctor, dentist, banks, grocery stores, pharmacy, movie theater, etc. as well as availability of housing for rent or purchase. Complete shopping, hospitals, and post- high school education options are available in Puyallup or Tacoma, approximately 60 miles. Outdoor recreational opportunities abound: hiking, climbing, skiing, birding, canoeing and kayaking, biking, and fishing among others. The climate is considered moderate at lower elevations, but is frequently overcast and rainy during fall, winter and spring. At Longmire, substantial snowfall is common from November-May.   • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • If you are a new employee in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
  • You must possess/obtain and maintain a current Water Treatment Operators Certificate, and you must be able to secure and maintain a valid WA Department of Health Services Class 1 Water Treatment Operators Certificate. Please indicate the level of certification you currently possess.
  • You must possess/obtain and maintain a current Wastewater Treatment Operators Certificate, and you must be able to secure and maintain a valid WA Department of Health Services Class 1 Wastewater Treatment Operators Certificate. Please indicate the level of certification you currently possess.
  • You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to a few nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
  • Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or
  • (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

Physical Demands: The incumbent will be required to do considerable walking, standing on concrete floors, and climbing stairways and ladders. Light to moderate physical effort is necessary to turn valves and controls, and to frequently lift and carry items weighing up to 40 pounds.

Working Conditions: Work is usually indoors and occasionally outside for short periods where the incumbent is subject to prevailing weather conditions. Incumbent is exposed to infections or diseases such as typhoid and dysentery while cleaning equipment or shoveling sludge, and the presence of hazardous gases such as methane, chlorine, hydrogen sulfide, and carbon monoxide. Incumbent is also subject to electrical shock, loud noises, battery acids, and hydraulic fluids while working around motors and pumps. There is frequent exposure to shock, burns, and strains. Incumbent follows prescribed safety practices and uses safety equipment such as face shields, gloves, hard-toe shoes, respirators, and protective clothing. Some of these safety items may be uncomfortable to wear and may be worn or used for long periods of time.

Current surplus and current or former displaced Federal individuals who have special priority selection rights under the Agency Career Transition Assistance Program (CTAP) or the Interagency Career Transition Assistance Program (ICTAP) must be well qualified for the position to receive consideration for special priority selection.
