Duties

  • This position serves as an interdisciplinary scientist who is Center and Agency recognized as an expert and authority for their area of specialization.
  • The scientist serves as an expert in reviewing the submission of tobacco applications to ensure the toxicology reviews meet the regulatory compliance outlines by CTP.
  • Reviews and evaluates the results of nonclinical pharmacological and toxicological studies submitted in support of tobacco product applications, to assess the relative toxicity of the tobacco products based on toxicity.
  • Reviews a wide range of tobacco products to determine the adequacy of the results from biology, toxicology, environmental science, computational modeling, and/or other studies concerned with environmental exposure.
  • Provides consultative services to scientist and officials on a wide range of matters. Compiles data to prepare presentation to support Agency's recommendation on scientific issues and proposes areas of study.

Qualifications

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
In order be eligible for the position of Toxicologist,
(GS-0415-11/12/13), you must meet the following requirements...

Basic Requirements Successfully completed a full four-year course of study at an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in Toxicology; or an appropriate discipline of the biological, medical, or veterinary sciences that included at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, biochemistry, or physiology, and 12 semester hours in toxicology.

This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (external link) at the time the degree was obtained in toxicology; or an appropriate discipline of the biological, medical, or veterinary sciences that included at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, biochemistry, or physiology, and 12 semester hours in toxicology. Courses in anatomy, chemistry, organic chemistry, biochemistry, biology, histology, and animal, human, microbial, or cellular physiology may be used to meet the 30-semester-hour requirement in chemistry, biochemistry, and physiology. Courses in statistics, bioassay, and test design may also apply to this requirement. Courses in cytology, embryology, cellular or microbial genetics, and biophysics may also be used to meet this requirement in those instances where the course work provided additional insight into the biophysical, biochemical, and physiological relationships involved. Only toxicology courses may be used to meet the requirement for 12 semester hours in toxicology. This may include courses dealing intensively with toxicological search, methods in toxicology, and essentials of toxicology, the study and review of toxicological literature, special reading courses, or other toxicologically-oriented subjects.

In addition to the Basic Requirements you must meet the specialized experience below:

  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Specialized experience is defined as experience that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled and has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

GS-11: One (1) year of specialized experience, equivalent to the GS-09 in the Federal service, to include reviewing and interpreting toxicological studies, data, applications, and/or reports; Conducting research into the toxicology of regulated products, such as chemicals, drugs, or tobacco. Developing or recommending methods to assess the toxicity of regulated products. OR Have 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree. You must submit an unofficial transcript to show you meet this requirement.

GS-12: One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade of GS-11 or equivalent band level of responsibility in the Federal Service with reviewing and interpreting toxicological studies, data, applications, and/or reports and generating written and verbal summaries of such information for use by others. Conducting research into the toxicology of regulated products, such as chemicals, drugs, or tobacco. Developing or recommending methods to assess the toxicity of regulated products. You must submit an unofficial transcript to show you meet this requirement.

GS-13: One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade of GS-12 or equivalent band level of responsibility in the Federal Service with reviewing, evaluating and interpreting toxicological studies, data, applications, and/or reports and generating written and verbal summaries of such information for use by others. Conducting research into the toxicology of regulated products, such as chemicals, drugs, or tobacco. Developing or recommending methods to assess the toxicity of regulated products. You must submit an unofficial transcript to show you meet this requirement.
