Duties

Help

As a Statistician, you will use your knowledge of and experience to optimize business results and customer experience by:

- Conducting research and analyses designed to identify, analyze, visualize, and report on emerging public health issues and problems.

- Serving as an expert in the analysis and quality evaluation of complex public health data and oversees the analysis of data using a variety of technologies and rigorous analytical techniques.

- Outlining scientific objectives, data to be used, analytical approaches and methodologies; developing new or modified methods to achieve desired results while ensuring scientific validity.

- Preparing comprehensive reports explaining methodology, results, data quality, and relevance to public health issues.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

Basic Requirement:


Basic Qualifications: You must possess one of the items listed below (A or B):

A. Degree: that included 15 semester hours in statistics (or in mathematics and statistics, provided at least 6 semester hours were in statistics), and 9 additional semester hours in one or more of the following: physical or biological sciences, medicine, education, or engineering; or in the social sciences including demography, history, economics, social welfare, geography, international relations, social or cultural anthropology, health sociology, political science, public administration, psychology, etc. Credit toward meeting statistical course requirements should be given for courses in which 50 percent of the course content appears to be statistical methods, e.g., courses that included studies in research methods in psychology or economics such as tests and measurements or business cycles, or courses in methods of processing mass statistical data such as tabulating methods or electronic data processing.

B. Combination of education and experience -- courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. The experience should have included a full range of professional statistical work such as (a) sampling, (b) collecting, computing, and analyzing statistical data, and (c) applying statistical techniques such as measurement of central tendency, dispersion, skewness, sampling error, simple and multiple correlation, analysis of variance, and tests of significance.

Minimum Qualifications: You must have one year specialized experience to perform successfully the duties of the position. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service performingof the following:
  • Conducting surveillance and epidemiologic analyses to support public health programs and initiatives.
  • Analyzing complex survey data using statistical software (e.g., SAS, SUDAAN, R, or equivalent tools).
  • Designing statistical analyses and selecting appropriate statistical methods for data evaluation.
  • Developing and communicating statistical findings through scientific products, reports, or data visualizations.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to gain employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. If such experience is on a part-time basis, you must provide the average number of hours worked per week as well as the beginning and ending dates of the experience so it can be fully credited.
