Duties

Help

  • Operates numerous types of engineering/construction equipment to include bulldozers, graders, backhoes, excavators, loaders, dump trucks, transport trucks, and trailers, etc. to assist with cleaning and maintaining roads and other land management areas.
  • Performs a wide variety of craft related tasks associated with the operation and maintenance of various facilities and recreation areas; responsible for repairs and maintenance of all types of equipment to include mobile cranes, excavators, graders, loaders, trucks, tractors, commercial mowers, etc.
  • Performs routine dam and facilities inspections in order to observe and document the condition of the facilities and associated structures; locates and resolves potential or unusual problems with dams, gate houses, or water conveyance structures.
  • Performs daily preventative maintenance to assigned equipment and performs limited field repairs,generally without direct supervision.
  • Complies with safety instructions and regulations, ensuring individual's safety, and promptly reporting unsafe acts, unsafe conditions, and accidents to supervisor.

Qualifications

Selective Placement Factors: This position requires a special qualification that has been determined to be essential to perform the duties and will be used as a screen out element. Those who do not provide evidence they possess the following selective factor(s) will be rated not qualified:

You must possess a valid commercial driver's license Class A, or you will not qualify for consideration. Applicants must document in their application materials how they meet this requirement.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Screen-out Element: Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum qualifications for trades and labor positions are determined by evaluation of job elements. You must meet at least 2 points on the screen-out element(s) and obtain an average of at least 2 points on all of the job elements in order to be considered qualified for this position.

You must meet all Eligibility and Qualification requirements, including time-in-grade restrictions and any selective placement factors if applicable, by 07/14/2026.

Physical Demands: Heavy physical effort is used by the operator in constantly reaching, bending, turning, and moving hands, arms, feet, and legs to handle different sets of controls to operator the equipment and attachments. Considerable strain is caused by the constant vibration of the equipment and the jerking and jolting from operator over rough surfaces. Because of the location of some of the controls and attachment, the operator is frequently required to work in awkward or strained positions. The is more strenuous because of the larger pieces of equipment and the frequent adjustments under more adverse operating conditions.

Working Environment: Work is performed in all types of weather, on hills, slopes, grades, rolling surfaces, and forested areas. The operator is exposed to injury due to the possibility of the equipment overturning. The operator is subject to noise, vibration, dust, dirt, and fumes from the motor and exhaust. The operator must pay close attention to the equipment, attachments, and terrain. Work is also performed on various hazardous waste sites requiring the proper training associated in performance of work on the identified sites. The operation of larger and more complicated equipment in more difficult circumstances increases the exposure to injury, overturning, noise, and vibration.

Education

There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.

Condition of Employment For Probationary Period: As a condition of employment for accepting this position, you will be required to serve a 1-Year probationary period/2-year trial period during which your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest will be evaluated. This probationary/trial period is an extension of the appointment process and therefore requires the agency to determine if continued employment would advance the public interest, meet the organization goals and mission of the agency, and/or otherwise promote the efficiency of the service.
