This position is located within the Department of the Interior, National Park Service, Southeast Region, Office of the Superintendent, Maintenance Division, Fort Ogleorpe, Georgia. The primary purpose of the position is to perform building and/or utility maintenance and operation duties.

This position is a Full-time temporary appointment not-to-exceed one year with potential to be extended for an additional one year for a maximum of two years based on agency needs and potential funding.

Duties

Help

As a Maintenance Mechanic, you will perform all aspects of the carpentry, electrical, plumbing, and HVAC trades at journeymen level. Major Duties below but not limited to:

  • Repairs and maintains historic buildings, government housing, support structures and buildings within accepted safety, health and sanitary conditions.
  • Constructs, alters, modifies and/or repairs a wide range of carpentry features in buildings, quarters and other facilities.
  • Builds small structures and replaces deteriorated sections of existing structures.
  • Plans, computes, and lays out projects and identifies material needs.
  • Installs, modifies, and repairs new and existing utility, supply, and disposal systems and equipment such as sewage, water, oil, and gas distribution systems.
  • Perform HVAC installation and maintenance.
  • Perform plumbing on potable water and wastewater systems and related equipment such floats, fittings, sinks, toilets, and fixtures.
  • Performs electrical wiring necessary to maintain existing 120- and 240-volt electrical systems and troubleshoots and repairs to 24- and 48-volt Photovoltaic power systems.

  • Uniform: You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • Minimum Age Requirement Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Experience that demonstrates the ability to perform most of the work as a Maintenance Mechanic at the journeyman level. At this level, I have performed the work without more than normal supervision. I have performed at this level in two of the following trades: Carpentry, Electric, Plumbing, Painting, Masonry, HVAC, or Roofing

DRIVER'S LICENSE: This position requires that the incumbent possess a Driver's License.

There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.

This announcement may be used to fill additional positions if identical vacancies occur within 90 days of the issue date of the referral certificate.

A selectee receiving a first appointment to the Federal Government (Civil Service) is entitled only to the lowest step of the grade for which selected. The display of a salary range on this vacancy shall not be construed as granting an entitlement to a higher rate of pay.

Physical Demands: Physical effort is heavy to moderate and requires occasional lifting or handling of objects or materials up to 50 pounds, unassisted, following proper lifting procedures to avoid injury. Frequently required to stand while working, climb ladders or scaffolding, and bend, stoop, climb, and work in awkward positions.

Working Conditions: Exposed to a variety of seasonal weather conditions while working outdoors (temperatures -40 to 90+ degrees). Subject to danger of falling from ladders or scaffolding. Exposed to dust, dirt, wind, and rain. May work with dangerous chemicals and around moving equipment; paints, solvents, etc. May be exposed to electrical shocks, and biting insects.
