Help

At the full performance level (WL-06) the major duties of this position include, but are not limited to the following:

  1. Clean restrooms, housing, dorm areas, offices, visitor centers, and workshops.
  2. Monitor supply inventories and coordinate with supervisor to replenish supplies.
  3. Serve as a backup to the supervisor in purchasing supplies and services to support a custodial operation.
  4. Assist supervisor in the hiring, onboarding, and training of new employees.
  5. Perform minor maintenance, repairs, and service to gas powered blowers and sprayers.
  6. Enforce safety standards for front country and backcountry operations.
  7. Lead other employees to ensure standards of service are maintained.

  • Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
  • You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 5 nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
  • Government Charge Card: You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
  • Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:

Your resume must show that you are able to perform custodial services and motor vehicle operations under normal supervision:

  • cleaning restrooms, housing, dorm areas;
  • replacing light bulbs and dispensers;
  • performing minor maintenance;
  • operating vehicles;
  • handling and transport supplies and materials

Additionally, your resume must show that you can teach others in tool use related to the custodial trade, techniquies, and the safe handing and storage of chemicals.

There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.

Additional information

This announcement may be used to fill additional positions if identical vacancies occur within 90 days of the issue date of the referral certificate.

Physical Demands: This position requires mild to moderate physical exertion in an indoor and outdoor environment, working up to 12,000 feet. The position may require some backcountry and overnight travel, the ability to lift up to 30 lbs. overhead; reach, push, and pull. The ability to climb a ladder may be required, as well as the ability to shovel snow, chip ice, spread ice melt, operate hand tools, and stand and walk for up 6 to 8 hours a day.

Working Conditions: Works indoors and outdoors; outdoors is required to supervise and work in conditions of high winds, cold, snow, ice, heat. Operates regularly from 8,000 to as much as 12,000 feet in elevation. May be required to hike as much as 6 hours per day, lift boxes weighing as much as 30 lbs. above the head. Operates a motor vehicle, trash truck with compactor, hooks and unhooks trailers, backs up trailers, loads animals, and operates a forklift.


Telework: The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are not suitable for telework.

Probationary Period: This probationary period is an extension of the appointment process and therefore requires the agency to determine if continued employment would advance the public interest, meet the organization goals and mission of the agency, and/or otherwise promote the efficiency of the service. In determining if your employment advances the public interest, the agency will consider:
