Duties

Help

  • Assist in the measurement or determination of distances, elevations, areas, angles, land boundaries, and other features of the earth's surface.
  • Assists in setting survey monuments; this requires digging holes with shovels and rock bars for prolonged periods.
  • Prepares or reviews the preparation of field notes, random lined diagrams, and computations to determine whether closures are within prescribed lines of accuracy.
  • Enters and retrieves data from data bases.
  • Position requires use of motor vehicles. In most cases this will be a 4-wheel drive or ATV.
  • Drafts Field Notes and Plats for the survey returns to be reviewed by the survey team lead.
  • Writes draft Reports of Survey Investigation for analysis and decision by the survey team lead.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement 07/01/2026 unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.

To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST state either "full-time" (or "40 hours a week") or "part-time" with the number of hours worked per week to ensure proper crediting of specialized experience. Failure to adequately provide information needed to determine number of hours worked in each position may result in that time not being credited when evaluating qualifying experience. For periods of time that reflect military service, the DD-214 or Statement of Service is sufficient to meet the full and/or part-time hours requirement as the service dates will be reflected.

Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade requirement in accordance with 5 CFR 300.604. If you are a current Federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must have completed a minimum of 52 weeks at the next lower grade level.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To qualify for this position at the GS-07 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: To qualify for the GS-07, you must possess at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 level in the Federal service, or comparable experience not gained through Federal service. Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include, but are not limited to, work as an engineering technician, soil conservation technician, or construction inspector, possessing the ability to assist the Survey Team Leader with the real time acquisition of engineering, scientific, environmental, topographic, geodetic, and hydrographic data associated with the districts dredging and civil works projects. Uses surveying methods such as precise leveling, state plane coordinates, second and third order traverse procedures, and computations to help plan and conduct various types of surveys; applicable operating systems as required to operate hydrographic data collection and analysis and file editing software. -OR-

EDUCATION:
Successful completion of one full year of graduate education directly related to the occupation (one year of full time graduate education is defined as 18 semester hours). -OR-

COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION:
Combinations of successfully completed education and specialized experience may be used to meet total experience requirements.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Work requires some physical exertion such as bending and walking in terrain that is rough, rocky, mountainous and densely vegetated. Required to lift and carry equipment necessary to efficiently perform the work of the position, and to provide for personal comfort and safety. This can include tools, personal protective equipment, food, and water for extended periods of work away from vehicles.

WORK ENVIROMENT: Office work is performed in a setting that is adequately lighted, ventilated, cooled and heated. When doing fieldwork is subject to cuts and bruises, extreme and adverse weather conditions, and injuries and discomforts from pests or animal. Employee will adhere to all safety rules.

Non-Competitive Rehire Eligibility: Temporary seasonal employees can only maintain their non-competitive rehire eligibility if they work no more than a combined total of Temporary NTE less than 1039 hours anywhere in the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) within their established service year. Accordingly, non-competitive rehire eligibility allows for re-appointment to the same position or another position appropriate for temporary appointment with the same qualification requirements (5 CFR 316.402[b][7]), based on series and grade, anywhere in the major subdivision (BLM).
