Duties

Help

The duties and responsibilities for an Interior Designer, GS-1008-12/13 generally include, but are not limited to, the following:

* Determine specification practicability for complex or costly projects, as well as, prepare statement of work or other binding specification or acquisition performance standards.
* Develop and validate procedures and checklists used by personnel in completing program or project tasks.
*Serve as an authoritative source of information and advice within the organization concerning interior design.
* Evaluate design objectives and employs innovative approaches to meet project needs and requirements.
* Serve as a trouble-shooter or consulting interior designer, providing, technical advice and guidance to the contractor regarding new or complex aspects of assignments or in performing the work required by the contract.
* Perform project management duties for a variety of interior design projects at different facilities and structures.
* Perform interior design duties pertaining to OBD projects and the Robert F. Kennedy (RFK) building to promote employee productivity, health, and welfare, and the health and welfare of the public.

Qualifications

To qualify for the position of Interior Designer, at GS-1008-12/13, you must meet the basic qualification requirements listed below AND possess the required specialized experience specific to this series and grade you're applying to.

If you are a current or former government employee on a permanent appointment in the competitive service, you will need to demonstrate 1-year (52-weeks) at the next lower grade level, to meet the time-in-grade requirements for this occupational series and grade. Additionally, please ensure to submit an applicable SF-50 (please refer to the "required documents" section for additional information).

Basic Requirement
A. Education:
Undergraduate or graduate education with a major study in interior design or other field that included or was supplemented by at least 30 semester hours in interior design, interior architecture, or interior environmental design; or passage of the National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) examination. (NOTE: You must provide a copy of your transcripts or a copy of your certification)

Experience: Specialized experience that required the performance of work concerned with the design and alteration of interior spaces to meet functional and aesthetic needs such as: (1) Identifying, researching, and creatively solving problems pertaining to the function and quality of the interior environment; (2) Performing services relative to interior spaces, including programming, design analysis, space planning and aesthetics, using specialized knowledge of interior construction, building systems and components, building codes, equipment, materials, and furnishings; (3) Preparing drawings and documents relative to the design of interior spaces in order to enhance and protect the health, safety, and welfare of the public; (4) Coordinating and integrating the mechanical, electrical, and structural engineering disciplines within the interior context; OR (5) Managing projects, developing cost estimates, evaluating bid proposals, reviewing construction documents, participating in on-site construction visits, conducting pre- and post-occupancy evaluations, developing standards for efficient space management, etc.

In addition to meeting the basic requirements above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below.

For the GS-12:
You must have one year of specialized experience at the GS-11 grade level or equivalent pay band in the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as: developing, and/or managing interior design project plans, budgets, and schedules; AND resolve interior design problems.

For the GS-13: You must have one year of specialized experience at the GS-12 grade level or equivalent pay band in the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as: assisting with analyzing the design, layout and construction or renovation of buildings; prepares statement of work or other binding documentation and/or performs preservation, restoration, and/or rehabilitation pertaining to interior design.

You MUST meet all qualification requirements, including time-in-grade, by the 05/27/2026 of this announcement.

Education must be reviewed and certified by an accrediting institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, in order for it to be creditable towards your qualifications. Therefore, provide only the attendance and/or degrees from accredited institution.

You must show proof the education credentials have been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in a conventional U.S. education program. It is your responsibility to provide such evidence when applying. If you are qualifying on foreign education, you MUST submit proof of creditability of education as evaluated by a credentialing agency. Transcripts must be uploaded with your application to verify education.

  1. You must submit a transcript, which may be unofficial, as long as it contains a full listing of courses, credit earned, grade and grade-point-average, subject area, degree(s) earned, and dates of award.
  2. Your transcript must come from a nationally accredited educational institution recognized by the Department of Education.
