Duties

Help

The primary purpose of this position is to perform building and/or utility maintenance and operation duties. Incumbent utilizes journeyman to master level knowledge and skills in several trades and crafts. The major duties for each park location are listed below.

ZION NATIONAL PARK:

  • Park-wide HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, & Air Conditioning) - 60%
  • Electrician - 30%
  • Plumbing - 10%
CARLSBAD CAVERNS NATIONAL PARK:
  • Park-wide HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, & Air Conditioning) - 20%
  • Electrician - 20%
  • Plumbing - 20%
  • Utility Systems Repairer-Operator - 20%
  • Lower-graded duties to include, but are not limited to: Carpentry, Water Treatment Plant Operations, Wastewater Treatment Repair & Maintenance, Motor Vehicle Operation (MVO).

Physical Demands: Physical effort is heavy to moderate, and required occasional lifting or handling of objects up to 50-100 pounds, unassisted, following proper lifting procedures to avoid injury. Frequently required to stand while working, climb ladders or scaffolding, and bend, stoop, climb, and work in awkward positions. This requires standing, bending, stooping, kneeling, climbing, and working in tiring and cramped positions.

Working Conditions: Exposed to a variety of seasonal weather conditions while working outdoors (temperatures -40 to 90+ degrees). Subject to danger of falling from ladders or scaffolding. Exposed to dust, dirt, wind, and rain. May work with dangerous chemicals and around moving equipment; paints, solvents, etc. May be exposed to electrical shocks, and biting insects. The incumbent's clothing may become soiled from grease, dust, and chemicals.
There is frequent exposure to the possibility of cuts, bruises, falling, burns, broken bones, and chemical vapors, constant noise, rotating machinery, dust grease, chemicals, oil, fumes, and infectious blood pathogens when working in or about systems. Incumbent may also be exposed to energized circuits, electrical shock, burns, electrical rotary devices, cuts and abrasions from the use of tools and equipment and burns from chemicals.
The imcumbent is required to wear prescribed safety equipment and to adhere to safety rules and regulations, and standards as set by OSHA and the Park's established Safety Plan. Snowmobile operation is occasionally required for winter operations at some parks.

  • UNIFORM: You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • WORK SCHEDULE: You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime, and/or shift work.
  • HOUSING: Park housing may be available at Zion National Park.
  • REQUIRED OCCUPANCY: Carlsbad Caverns National Park has Required Occupancy of government quarters.
  • CERTIFICATION: Carlsbad Caverns National Park will require selectee to obtain an EPA Section 608 Clean Air Act Certification within one year of start date.
  • TRAVEL: Carlsbad Caverns National Park may require travel overnight away from home up to 4 nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes. Travel is not required for Zion National Park.
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old.
  • Ability to lift up to 75 pounds.
  • PROBATIONARY PERIOD: As a condition of employment for accepting this position, you will be required to serve a 1-year probationary period during which your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest will be evaluated. Qualifications

PROBATIONARY PERIOD INFORMATION, CONTINUTED: This probationary period is an extension of the appointment process and therefore requires the agency to determine if continued employment would advance the public interest, meet the organization goals and mission of the agency, and/or otherwise promote the efficiency of the service. In determining if your employment advances the public interest, the agency will consider:

QUALIFICATIONS:


To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:
  1. Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision (SCREEN OUT). Your resume should clearly demonstrate the ability to perform the work as a Maintenance Mechanic at the journeyman level. At this level, your experience may include the following:
    • The ability to provide technical recommendations for methods, tools, and materials used in these trades;
    • Plan, layout all work to be completed, and ensure proper selection of materials and manpower for the completion of projects;
    • Clearly demonstrated performance at this level in at least two of the following trades: Masonry, Electrical, Plumbing, Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic, Utilities Systems Repair-Operator, and Engineering Equipment Operator.
  2. Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprints reading).
  3. Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment.
  4. Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation Repair, etc.
  5. Knowledge of Materials.
  6. Technical Practices (theoretical precise, artistic).
  7. Use of Measuring Instruments.

Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will be paid if the selectee lives outside the local commuting area and is otherwise eligible for reimbursement of relocation expenses in accordance with the Federal Travel Regulation.

Zion National Park is located in southwestern Utah. The climate is generally hot with daytime high temperatures ranging from 95 to 110 degrees in the summer, and 55 to 10 degrees in the winter. Nighttime lows range from 65 degrees in the summer to 10 degrees in the winter. Minimal shopping is available in Springdale, Utah, located two (2) miles from Park Headquarters. A full range of shopping, medical, dental, religious, and recreational facilities are available in Hurricane (25 miles), St. George, (45 miles), and in Cedar City, (63 miles), Utah. Elementary school (grades K-5) is available in Springdale, with bus service provided. Junior high and high school is available in Hurricane, with bus service provided. Utah Tech University is located in St. George, and Southern Utah University is located in Cedar City. **Due to the desirable nature of the area surrounding Zion National Park, please be sure to research and understand the limited housing options and the area's cost-of-living.**

Carlsbad Caverns National Park is located 27 miles from the city of Carlsbad in southeastern New Mexico. The Park, at an elevation of 4,400 feet, has a semi-arid climate with hot summers, mild winters, abundant sunshine, low humidity, and approximately 10 inches of rainfall per year. Carlsbad (population over 34,000) has all amenities and services including medical and dental facilities, motels, banks, restaurants, churches, grocery stores, department stores, and several recreation facilities. Schools include K-12 and Southeast New Mexico College (formerly New Mexico State University - Carlsbad Campus). Other services can be found in Albuquerque (280 miles), El Paso, Texas (170 miles), Lubbock, Texas (180 miles), or Midland/Odessa, Texas (150 miles). Recreation opportunities are plentiful with Guadalupe Mountains National Park located 50 miles from the city of Carlsbad, two state parks (Brantley Lake and Living Desert Zoo), and the Lincoln National Forest within an hour's drive. Note: A government van pool provides service between Carlsbad, NM and Carlsbad Caverns National Park for staff on the core shift.

A selectee receiving a first appointment to the Federal Government (Civil Service) is entitled only to the lowest step of the grade for which selected. The display of a salary range on this vacancy shall not be construed as granting an entitlement to a higher rate of pay.
