This position is being filled using the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act (ANILCA) local hiring authority (16 USC 3198). Any U.S. Citizen who has acquired special knowledge or expertise regarding the natural or cultural resources of Denali National Park and Preserve, by reason of having either lived or worked in or near the unit may apply. See Qualifications section for eligibility requirements.

Duties

Help

If selected, you will work as a Maintenance Worker, WG-4749-04, at Denali National Park and Preserve. Selectee works for the Facilities Operations Supervisor and/or under the direction of Work Leaders or other higher graded employees and may be assigned a variety of Facilities Operations duties. Duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Performs simple and routine maintenance and repairs involved in the maintenance and repair of grounds, exterior structures, buildings, and related utilities, requiring the use of a variety of trade practices associated with occupations such as carpentry, masonry, painting, and other related trades.
  • Assists higher-graded maintenance workers or tradesmen in the performance of their work on occasion.
  • Performs minor carpentry repairs using simple measures and hand tools with such tasks as replacing broken planks on picnic tables ; repairing siding or wooden chairs with nails, reapplying/repairing molding, or installing shelving, signage or items like whiteboards.
  • Performs minor painting using brush and roller according to specific instructions on objects such as picnic tables, trash barrels, or buildings.
  • Performs minor plumbing repairs such as tightening or replacing in-kind fittings and fixtures which do not require custom fitting or solder joints, replaces faucet washers, and unplugs drains using a plunger.
  • Makes minor repairs as needed and refers more complex problems to higher-graded workers.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Duties will also include timely documentation of daily work accomplishments using a computerized timekeeping program.

  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.

  • Applicants must be at least (1) 18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

Special knowledge or expertise concerning the park's or preserve's natural and/or cultural resources and the management thereof is required. Local knowledge of the resources and the typical conditions that affect the work to be accomplished will be applied in the performance of duties.

Areas considered "near" the Denali National Park and Preserve duty station include only: Anderson, Cantwell, Chulitna, Clear, Curry, Denali Park, Ferry, Healy, Kantishna, Lake Minchumina, McKinley Village, Nenana, Nikolai, Petersville, Talkeetna, Tanana, Telida, and Trapper Creek.

  1. Ability to do the work of a Maintenance Worker, WG-4749-04, without more than normal supervision in the trades of carpentry, masonry, plumbing, painting, roofing and other related trades.
  2. Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, repair, etc.
  3. Knowledge of technical practices (theoretical, precise, artistic).
  4. Ability to use measuring instruments.
  5. Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. (including blueprint reading).
  6. Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment.
  7. Knowledge of materials.

There is no substitution of education for the required special knowledge or expertise concerning the park's or preserve's natural and/or cultural resources and the management thereof as outlined in this announcement.

Additional information

NOTE: In support of Executive Order (EO) 14189 "Celebrating America's 250th Birthday" and EO 14314 "Making America Beautiful Again by Improving our National Parks," the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) has approved an exception to the 1039-hour time limitation for this position. This approval may extend the time limitation to 1560 hours for this temporary seasonal appointment.

A selectee receiving a first appointment to the Federal Government (Civil Service) is entitled only to the lowest step of the grade for which selected. The display of a salary range on this vacancy shall not be construed as granting an entitlement to a higher rate of pay.

This announcement may be used to fill additional positions if identical vacancies occur within 90 days of the issue date of the referral certificate.

This is an excepted service appointment that does not confer competitive status.

Government housing is not available.

All travel, transportation, and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the sole responsibility of the selectee.

Alaska currently does not have a state income tax.

Selectee may be moved between duty stations within park boundaries.

Physical Demands: The incumbent may lift, carry, set up and handle tools, parts, equipment and materials that weigh up to or over 50 pounds unassisted. May work from ladders, platforms, scaffolds and perform work or repairs in hard to reach places and positions. Requires standing, stooping, bending, kneeling and climbing in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Required to operate standard hand and power tools.

Working Conditions: Work is performed both inside and outside. Incumbent is subject to climatic extremes in all weather conditions. Work conditions may be dusty, greasy and noisy. There is exposure to fumes and the possibility of electric shock, bruises, burns, scrapes and cuts. The work requires frequent special care to avoid injuries. To reduce the dangers, the incumbent is required to follow prescribed safety practices such as wearing specified trades and craft protection clothing (i.e., hard-hats, gloves, safety shoes and glasses, ear plugs, respirators and rain gear).
