This is an open continuous vacancy announcement. Applicants will be referred periodically throughout the announcement period.   • Replaces solenoids, relays, control modules, water pumps, fuel injectors, spark plugs, brake pads/shoes, wheel bearings/hubs, ball joints, control arms, steering linkages, exhaust components, cooling system components, engine components, belts, hoses, tires, and complete assemblies such as engines, transmissions, transfer cased, transaxles and rearends.
  • Services and checks air conditioning systems, including purging and recharging systems, flushing radiators and replacing anti-freeze solutions, and aligning cars and trucks by adjusting caster, camber and toe.
  • May assist with, or prepare monthly reports, requisitions for supplies and parts, job reports and vehicle labor and parts forms.
  • Responsible for neatness and organization of work area and assigned tools; parts control and inventory, immediate cleanup of any spills or other concerns that may present a hazard to shop personnel or others.

NOTE: OPM has identified this position as eligible for an exception to the typical 1039 hours limit. This exception allows up to 1560 hours which may extend the season dates noted in the Summary above.

In support of Executive Order (EO) 14189 "Celebrating America's 205th Birthday" and EO 14314 "Making America Beautiful Again by Improving our National Parks" the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) has approved an exception to the 1039 hour time limitation for this position. This approval extends the time limitation up to 1560 hours for this temporary seasonal appointment.

This announcement may be used to fill additional positions if identical vacancies occur within 90 days of the issue date of the referral certificate.

Employment may be terminated at any time due to fluctuations in funding levels, project needs, employee performance, or other considerations.

You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work overtime.

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old due to the hazardous work (i.e. driving a motor vehicle, etc.)

Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision (SCREEN OUT):

Experience performing vehicle and equipment operation checks to determine safety deficiencies or service requirements of vehicles and equipment; performing maintenance on automobiles, trucks, and tractors including adjusting brakes, replacing spark plugs, cleaning or replacing filters, and rotating tires; repairing gasoline and diesel engines including replacing solenoids, water pumps, mufflers, radiator caps, and a variety of belts and hoses; inspecting, repairing, and overhauling small engines and other components on items such as lawn mowers, weed eaters, pumps, ATV's and other related equipment under normal supervision, subject to inspection.

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.

Additional information

Non-Competitive Rehire Eligibility: Temporary seasonal employees can only maintain their non-competitive rehire eligibility if they work no more than a combined total of Temporary NTE less than 1040 hours anywhere in the National Park Service (NPS) within their established service year. Accordingly, non-competitive rehire eligibility allows for re-appointment to the same position or another position appropriate for temporary appointment with the same qualification requirements (5 CFR 316.402[b][7]), based on series and grade, anywhere in the major subdivision (NPS).

If you have held a temporary seasonal appointment in the past 12 months and have already worked the maximum temporary appointment less than 1040 hours during that period, you are still welcome to apply. However, please be aware that exceeding the limit of 1040 hours in your established service year will result in the loss of your non-competitive rehire eligibility.

The limit can be exceeded by working multiple temporary seasonal positions that result in a combined total greater than 1040 hours. The limit also can be exceeded by working a single temporary seasonal appointment that exceeds 1040 hours, unless granted an exception by OPM.

Physical Demands: The incumbent makes repairs which often require them to work in tiring, awkward, and uncomfortable positions, and the work performed frequently involves standing for long periods of time, bending, stooping, crawling under vehicles, and making repairs in tight spaces. The incumbent frequently lifts, handles, and carries parts and equipment weighing up to 18 kilograms (40 pounds), and occasionally moves moderately heavy items weighing up to 23 kilograms (50 pounds) with assistance or with mechanical devices. This is a match to the physical effort described at the grade 8 level in the job grading standard. At that grade level the incumbent makes repairs which often require them to work in tiring, awkward, and uncomfortable positions, and they frequently stand for long periods of time, bend, stoop, crawl under vehicles, and make repairs in tight spaces. They frequently lift, handle, and carry parts and equipment weighing up to 18 kilograms (40 pounds), and occasionally they move moderately heavy items with assistance including objects weighing up to 23 kilograms (50 pounds).


Working Conditions: Work is usually performed inside on concrete surfaces where there is exposure to drafts, noise, and fumes from vehicles, and occasionally the work is performed outside under adverse weather conditions. The incumbent is continually exposed to dirt, dust, and grease, and to the potential for burns, chemical irritations, shocks, and bruises, cuts, and strains. To reduce the dangers and irritations the incumbent follows prescribed safety practices and uses safety equipment such as safety shoes and glasses, and respirators. The working conditions of this position are consistent with the grade 8 level in the job grading standard. At that grade level the work is usually performed inside on concrete surfaces where there is exposure to drafts, noise, and fumes from vehicles with continual exposure to dirt, dust, and grease, and the potential for burns, chemical irritations, shocks, bruises, cuts, and strains. Prescribed safety practices and the use of safety equipment such as safety shoes, glasses, and respirators are utilized to reduce dangers and irritations from these types of working conditions.
