This is an open continuous vacancy announcement. Applicants will be referred periodically throughout the announcement period. Major Duties:

  • Does the full range of cleaning duties in assigned areas following general instructions on the work to be done. Scrubs, strips, waxes, and polishes floors using heavy (industrial type) powered scrubbers and buffers. Washes walls using powered wall washing machine and/or by hand.
  • Vacuums/cleans rugs using heavy vacuum cleaner. Adjusts, cleans and oils these machines and changes brushes, rollers, buffers, and other attachements on them. Washes and replaces blinds and washes ceiling fixtures and room partitions using ladders and scaffolds.
  • Moves heavy furniture, supplies, and equipment. Replaces and/or installs paper goods, etc. in restrooms. Uses various preparation to clean and maintain linoleum, wood, marble, and various kinds of floors, wall and ceiling surfaces. Removes stains from a variety of surfaces using chemicals and cleaning solutions.
  • As required, keeps shop areas clean and in order. Sweeps and wet mops floor and removes oil, hydaulic fluid, grease, and other spilled liquids. Moves heavy boxes, crates, parts, or other obstacles in order to clean up the area and picks up scraps of wood, metal, and other materials.
  • Removes scrap and trash cans from area to central pickup point. Wipes benches, machinery, etc., as directed. Performs general trash collection/removal from areas such as offices, restrooms, public areas, etc. Operates light duty motor vehicles weighing up to 10,000lbs. to transport personnel, material, or equipment to work sites located on the park.

  • You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • Government housing may be available depending on the duty location
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old due to hazardous duties (driving a motor vehcile)

Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision. (SCREEN OUT): Ability to perform simple Custodial Worker duties such as 1) Mopping/waxing floors, cleaning mirrors, windows, urinals, and toilet bowls, cleaning walls, counter tops, sinks, fixtures, drinking fountains; 2) Collecting trash/refuse from containers and picking up litter; 3) Safely utilizing a variety of cleaning products containing chemicals that require measuring correct amounts of product to properly clean and disinfect multiple types of surfaces, floors, and carpets used in custodial work. ( i.e. glass cleaners, disinfectants, hand soaps, carpet cleaners, general purpose cleaners) under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed.

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.

A selectee receiving a first appointment to the Federal Government (Civil Service) is entitled only to the lowest step of the grade for which selected. The display of a salary range on this vacancy shall not be construed as granting an entitlement to a higher rate of pay.

Non-Competitive Rehire Eligibility: Temporary seasonal employees can only maintain their non-competitive rehire eligibility if they work no more than a combined total of Temporary NTE less than 1040 hours anywhere in the National Park Service (NPS) within their established service year. Accordingly, non-competitive rehire eligibility allows for re-appointment to the same position or another position appropriate for temporary appointment with the same qualification requirements (5 CFR 316.402[b][7]), based on series and grade, anywhere in the major subdivision (NPS).

If you have held a temporary seasonal appointment in the past 12 months and have already worked the maximum temporary appointment less than 1040 hours during that period, you are still welcome to apply. However, please be aware that exceeding the limit of 1040 hours in your established service year will result in the loss of your non-competitive rehire eligibility.

The limit can be exceeded by working multiple temporary seasonal positions that result in a combined total greater than 1040 hours. The limit also can be exceeded by working a single temporary seasonal appointment that exceeds 1040 hours, unless granted an exception by OPM.

NOTE: In support of Executive Order (EO) 14189 "Celebrating America's 250th Birthday" and EO 14314 "Making America Beautiful Again by Improving our National Parks" the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) has approved an exception to the 1039 hour time limitation for this position. This approval extends the time limitation to 1560 hours for this temporary seasonal appointment.


Employment may be terminated at any time due to fluctuations in funding levels, project needs, employee performance, or other considerations.


Physical Demands: Moderately heavy physical effort is required when: using ladder and scaffolds to clean walls, ceilings, windows, ceiling fixtures, etc.; operating powered equipment; removing cans of or other containers of trash; and occasionally lifts objects weighing over 50 pounds.

Working Conditions: Usually works indoors in areas, which normally have adequate, heat, light, and ventilation. Is exposed to vibration from heavy equipment and to skin irritations from strong cleaning solutions used in stripping floors, etc. Care is required to avoid serious injuries when working on ladders and scaffolds and when using heavy powered equipment. Occasionally works outdoors in possible inclement weather conditions and/or extreme temperatures.
