WG-4749-05 MAINTENANCE WORKER (BUILDING & UTILITIES) MAJOR DUTIES MAY INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING:

  • Performs simple and routine maintenance and repair of grounds, exterior structures, buildings, equipment and related utilities and assists higher graded maintenance workers or tradesmen in the performance of their work.
  • Performs minor carpentry repairs using simple measures and hand tools on such tasks as replacing broken planks on picnic tables; broken windows using precut stock; minor adjustments or replaces hinges, latches and catches.
  • Performs minor painting using brush and roller according to specific instructions on projects where appearances are not critical such as staining picnic tables and trash barrels.
  • Performs minor plumbing repairs such as tightening or replacing in-kind fittings and fixtures which do not require custom fitting or solder joints; replaces faucet washers; unplugs drains using a plunger; replaces liquid petroleum gas bottles.
  • Receives, unloads and processes incoming shipments according to established procedures. Reports discrepancies and damage to others responsible for such items.
  • Performs routine maintenance on campground sites and trails using hand tools to re-grade and reset barriers to restore areas to original appearances. Collects trash.
  • Operates a light truck to pick up supplies and to transport materials to and from work sites while assisting on project work.
  • Cleans and services chemical toilets, restrooms, and other campground or visitor facilities. Makes minor repairs as needed and refers problems to higher graded workers.
  • Operates a forklift to load and unload supplies and light equipment not requiring special rigging.

WG-4749-07 MAINTENANCE WORKER (BUILDING & UTILITIES) MAJOR DUTIES MAY INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING:
  • Performs repairs to buildings and quarters. Constructs, installs, repairs and replaces items such as doors, shelves, supply racks, hardware, frame structures, windows, trim and cabinets. Replaces defective siding, steps, windowsills and thresholds; replaces glass panes and damaged portions of concrete or wooden walks and/or steps. Uses both hand and power tools such as hammers, bars, handsaws, screw drivers, squares, skill saws, jig saws, routers, handheld belt sanders and drills.
  • Applies premixed paints or stains to masonry, gypsum board or wood surfaces using brushes or rollers. Paints various types of structures such as interior and exterior metal, wood and masonry surfaces, and a variety of wooden trim and new and old cabinets. Paints garbage cans, racks, and picnic tables and sign-posts. Uses oil, lacquer and latex based paints, stains, varnishes, and thinners. Assists higher-level employees by mixing or stirring paints, moving drop cloths and scaffolds, and cleaning walls in preparation for painting. Cleans brushes, rollers and spray equipment. Utilizes scrapers, sandpaper, steel wool, brushes, rollers, ladders, air and airless sprayers.
  • Performs plumbing tasks such as replacing hose bibs, valves, nipples, unions and elbows, fixtures, toilets, flush valves, faucets, and various types of pipe and copper lines. Cut and thread pipes and winterizes water systems. Utilizes a variety of materials, tools, and equipment associated with the plumbing trade.
  • Performs electrical tasks involving making repairs that can be accomplished by removing, replacing, tightening, splicing, and insulating defective wiring and fixtures. Utilizes hand tools such as screwdrivers, pliers, wire cutters, strippers, drills and soldering irons. The incumbent is not required to perform specified length and angled cuts required of higher graded electricians and their work is checked during progress and upon completion.
  • Performs masonry work of limited difficulty involving the maintenance, repair, construction, and/or stabilization of historic sites built of stone, mortar, or adobe and/or contemporary buildings, features or structures. As directed/prescribed, mixes soils, water and amendments for mortars or adobes; removes damaged portions of walls or other architectural features in preparation for repair work and may perform duties that require a basic knowledge of applicable techniques and procedures to complete.
  • Knowledgeable in handling and proper safety procedures encountered in operations including understanding and using SOS (Safety Data Sheets), along with proper PPE usage. Makes routine and emergency repairs at all park facilities as required. Participates in weekly safety meetings and bi-annual park wide safety days. Employee will adhere to all required park safety rules and OSHA standards. Maintains safety check on division vehicles, i.e., batteries, brakes, fluids, etc.; keeps vehicles clean.
  • May perform other duties (in the event of park needs) such as janitorial cleaning, trash pickup, grounds keeping, digging, raking or sweeping; and, assisting in transporting camp and work supplies and construction materials.

  • UNIFORM: You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • WORK SCHEDULE: You may be required to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime.
  • Government housing may be available.
  • MINIMUM AGE REQUIREMENT: Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

SCREENOUT MAINTENANCE WORKER; WG-4749-05: Performs simple and routine trail maintenance duties. This includes tasks such as cutting roots, moving rocks, digging ditches, clearing brush, hiking on steep and uneven terrain. Experience includes the use and maintenance of proper tools to complete each task. Able to perform the strenuous work required by this position such as carrying heavy objects weighing over 50 pounds and hiking mountainous terrain up to 12 miles per day. Takes initiative to solve difficult problems and can accomplish a variety of trail laborer assignments independently and safely.

SCREENOUT MAINTENANCE WORKER; WG-4749-07: Performs the most difficult and complex maintenance work tasks associated with a variety of trades such as carpentry, painting, electrical, masonry, and other trades appropriate to this position. I have led others in the performance of such tasks as a regular part of my duties. I have extensive experience in building maintenance and can repair and operate a variety of tools and equipment associated with the trades above. I also have been involved in other related areas such as rehabilitation and maintenance of historic structures. I take initiative to solve complex problems and can accomplish the most complex work assignments.

ADDITIONAL SELECTIONS: This announcement may be used to fill additional positions if identical vacancies occur within 90 days of the issue date of the referral certificate.

Non-Competitive Rehire Eligibility: Temporary seasonal employees can only maintain their non-competitive rehire eligibility if they work no more than a combined total of Temporary NTE less than 1040 hours anywhere in the National Park Service (NPS) within their established service year. Accordingly, non-competitive rehire eligibility allows for re-appointment to the same position or another position appropriate for temporary appointment with the same qualification requirements (5 CFR 316.402[b][7]), based on series and grade, anywhere in the major subdivision (NPS).

If you have held a temporary seasonal appointment in the past 12 months and have already worked the maximum temporary appointment less than 1040 hours during that period, you are still welcome to apply. However, please be aware that exceeding the limit of 1040 hours in your established service year will result in the loss of your non-competitive rehire eligibility.

The limit can be exceeded by working multiple temporary seasonal positions that result in a combined total greater than 1040 hours. The limit also can be exceeded by working a single temporary seasonal appointment that exceeds 1040 hours, unless granted an exception by OPM.

Employment may be terminated at any time due to fluctuations in funding levels, project needs, employee performance, or other considerations.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Heavy physical exertion is frequently required in bending, lifting, and using hand and power tools in trail work. Examples of typical strenuous activity, include frequently lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 100 pounds, carrying and rolling rocks and logs, moving rocks of several tons with rock bars, using hammers to crush or shape rock, and using shovels extensively; frequently walks up to 20 miles daily; and must not have potential emergency medical problems that could complicate work in remote areas for extended periods of time.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Incumbent must have the ability to live and work effectively in isolated backcountry areas in close contact with small numbers of people. Incumbent must live and work out-of-doors on projects including mountainous terrain up to 14,000 feet in elevation in all extremes of weather. Trail work is dusty and hazardous, conditions may exist when moving rocks, working in and around rock slide areas, working around explosives, falling and bucking trees, and working around machinery.

TELEWORK: The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position ARE NOT suitable for telework.
