Note: The positions are either a GS-04 or GS-05 based on qualifications. You must apply for each grade(s) you wish to be considered for. At the GS-04 level, incumbent will work in an assistant capacity under closer supervision.

Major Duties:

  • Serves as a team member engaged in the planning, design, and construction of park facility repair and rehabilitation projects.
  • Performs detailed measurements of existing infrastructure and enters data into databases.
  • Analyzes and performs condition assessments and identifies deficiencies in existing facilities and systems.
  • Researches and drafts standard design and construction details for the park.
  • Assists with topographic survey and GIS mapping.
  • Assists with the development of a cost estimating database to track and analyze construction cost.
  • Drafts and edits technical engineering reports and effectively documents project work and other accomplishments.
In addition to the above, GS-05 duties include:
  • Mentoring and monitoring junior level employees.
  • Project management.
Yosemite National Park, California, known worldwide for its spectacular natural beauty, is the backdrop for this position. Sitting astride the Sierra Nevada Mountains, the park covers 1,182 square miles of varied wilderness ecosystems, from river valleys to alpine meadows to lofty 13,000-foot-high peaks. El Portal, the Administrative Area where this position is based is located 195 miles from San Francisco, 65 miles from Merced, and 97 miles from Fresno. Shared housing is located in El Portal about 1 mile from the office; laundry is available in the housing area. There is a post office, library, and gas station with a convenience store in El Portal. There is a store and medical clinic in Yosemite Valley, but the closest hospital is 29 miles away in Mariposa; most people do their grocery shopping there or in Merced or Fresno. Elevation is approximately 2,200 feet in El Portal and 4,000. The park is open year-round with the majority of activities occurring during the busy season March through October.   • You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • Overtime may be required.
  • You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 1 night per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
  • Travel, transportation and relocation expenses will not be paid. Relocation expenses will be the employee's responsibility.
  • Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-01/30/2026-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience.

To qualify for this position at the GS-04 grade level, you must possess of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:

EXPERIENCE: Successful completion of six (6) months of general work experience AND six (6) months of specialized work experience. General work experience is any type of work that demonstrates the ability to perform the work of the position, or experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation. Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include technical work in: drafting, surveying construction estimating, physical science, mathematics, aerospace, architecture, chemicals, electrical or mechanical systems, mining, petroleum, or nuclear systems. Experience in a trade or craft may be credited as specialized experience when the work provided intensive knowledge of engineering principles, techniques, methods, and precedents. Examples are trade positions with substantial developmental, test, or design responsibilities such as: Planner and estimator who analyzed designs for production purposes. Instrument maker or model maker who performed design or development work on devices fabricated. You must include hours/week worked on your resume.

EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least two (2) full academic years above high school that included at least 12 semester hours in any combination of courses such as: engineering, engineering or industrial technology, construction, physics, drafting, surveying, physical science, or mathematics. You must include transcripts.

Successful completion of a combination of experience and education as described above that when combined equal 100% of the qualification requirements. For example, one full year of education (50%), and 6 months of specialized experience as defined above (50%), equals 100% of the qualification requirements. You must include transcripts and hours/week worked in your resume.

To qualify for this position at the GS-05 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
EXPERIENCE: Successful completion of at least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities that equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include technical work in: drafting, surveying construction estimating, physical science, mathematics, aerospace, architecture, chemicals, electrical or mechanical systems, mining, petroleum, or nuclear systems. Experience in a trade or craft may be credited as specialized experience when the work provided intensive knowledge of engineering principles, techniques, methods, and precedents. EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least four (4) full years of study in a program leading to a bachelor's degree with either (a) major study in an appropriate field of engineering, construction, or industrial technology; or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as: engineering, engineering or industrial technology, construction, physics, drafting, surveying, physical science, or mathematics. You must include your transcripts.

Successful completion of a combination of experience and education as described that when combined equal 100% of the qualification requirements. NOTE: Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree is creditable.For example, 1 full year of education, in excess of the first 60 semester hours (50%), and 6 months of specialized experience as defined above (50%), equals 100% of the qualification requirements. You must include your transcripts and hours/week worked in your resume.

Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

Physical Demands: The work requires some physical exertion such as long periods of standing; walking over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces; recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities; and recurring lifting of moderately heavy items.

Working Conditions: The work environment is comprised of the conventional office with periodic travel to project sites. The work involves moderate risk and exposure to moving equipment or machines, engine exhaust, associated high levels of noise, and outdoor weather conditions involving exposure to cold/hot, rain/sun, and a variety of other park conditions/features such as streams, rivers, or other bodies of water. Safety precautions may be required such as hard hats and steel toed boots.

Non-Competitive Rehire Eligibility: Temporary seasonal employees can only maintain their non-competitive rehire eligibility if they work no more than a combined total of Temporary NTE less than 1040 hours anywhere in the National Park Service (NPS) within their established service year. Accordingly, non-competitive rehire eligibility allows for re-appointment to the same position or another position appropriate for temporary appointment with the same qualification requirements (5 CFR 316.402[b][7]), based on series and grade, anywhere in the major subdivision (NPS).

If you have held a temporary seasonal appointment in the past 12 months and have already worked the maximum temporary appointment less than 1040 hours during that period, you are still welcome to apply. However, please be aware that exceeding the limit of 1040 hours in your established service year will result in the loss of your non-competitive rehire eligibility.

The limit can be exceeded by working multiple temporary seasonal positions that result in a combined total greater than 1040 hours. The limit also can be exceeded by working a single temporary seasonal appointment that exceeds 1040 hours, unless granted an exception by OPM.

Employment may be terminated at any time due to fluctuations in funding levels, project needs, employee performance, or other considerations.
