Duties

Help

The major duties of the General Supply Specialist include, but are not limited, the following:

  • Accountable for the management, control and inventory of all property, uniforms, and equipment assigned to the Force in the Washington Metropolitan Area.
  • Responsible for the procurement needs for those areas in order to provide the cost savings of bulk purchase, and to ensure standardization throughout the Force.
  • Continually reviews the property management procedures employed by the Force and makes recommendations for improvements.
  • Coordinates business accounts for law enforcement equipment between the Property Section, the Force, and the National Park Service.
  • Responsible for the receipt, inspection, care and safeguarding of all personal property and evidence received at the Property Office.

  • You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the United States Park Police uniform standards. An allowance will be provided.
Probationary Period: As a condition of employment for accepting this position, you are required to serve a 1 year probationary period during which your fitness & whether your continued employment advances the public interest will be evaluated. This probationary period is an extension of the appointment process & therefore requires the agency to determine if continued employment would advance the public interest, meet the organization goals & mission of the agency, &/or otherwise promote efficiency of service. In determining if your employment advances the public interest, the agency will consider:
  • your performance & conduct;
  • the needs & interests of the agency;
  • whether continued employment would advance organizational goals of the agency or the Government; &
  • whether continued employment would advance efficiency of the Federal service.
Under applicable law, the employment of an individual serving a probationary automatically terminates when that period ends unless the agency affirmatively certifies, in writing, that the individual's employment should continue & that their appointment should be finalized. In the absence of agency action to affirmatively certify continued employment beyond the probationary period, such appointments are terminated. Upon completion of your probationary period your employment will be terminated unless you receive certification, in writing, that your continued employment advances the public interest.

  • You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to occasionally. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
  • You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience.


To qualify for this position at the GS-09 grade level, you must possess all of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:

EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-7 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). You must show that you have experience with all of the following: Preparing records or reports; Requisitioning supplies or equipment; Utilizing supply regulations in inventory control and management; Monitoring usage transactions to track the procurement, storage, and disposition of equipment and property; AND Receiving/inventory of firearms and association equipment. You must include hours per week worked.

EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least a master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work of the position, such as Global Supply Management, Supply Chain Management, Logistics Management. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)

Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. To combine education and experience, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then, divide your semester hours of graduate education beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages. (The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify.) (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

You must include months, years and hours per week worked to receive credit for your work and/or volunteer experience. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. Part-time hours are prorated. You will not receive any credit for experience that does not indicate exact hours per week or is listed as "varies". Experience listed as full-time will be credited at 40 hours per week.

Education

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.

Physical Demands: The work is basically sedentary, though often requiring moderate to intense concentration; however, walking, bending, and lifting is also associated with the property management function.

Working Conditions: The work is performed primarily in an office setting. However, the incumbent may be required to travel to other US Park Police worksites and various parts of the United States for negotiating matters concerning contract discrepancies or delivering equipment.

The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are not suitable for telework.
