Duties

Help

As a GS-09 Biologist, the incumbent performs the full range of duties but with close supervision and direction including:

  • Serves as natural resource subject matter expert for Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park in Skagway, AK.
  • Designs, develops, tests, and implements statistically valid data collection protocols to identify, evaluate, and monitor wildlife populations using appropriate advanced technology and methods of data analysis and modeling to draw valid inferences about population characteristics
  • Based on results of inventories, monitoring, and in-depth research, develops and conducts scientifically credible protection, mitigation, and restoration projects needed to restore and/or maintain the integrity of native wildlife populations, critical habitat, and physical resources.
  • Identifies research needs, submits funding proposals for priority research needs, develops and fosters research collaborations, prepares requests for proposals or statements of work, and provides oversight for research projects.

  • Uniform You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • Work Schedule: You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime.
  • Travel: You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 10 nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
  • Government Charge Card: You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
  • Minimum Age Requirement: Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.
  • Passport: Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid US Passport or Passport Card

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-01/28/2026-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). BASIC REQUIREMENT
Must have successfully completed a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included a major field of study in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. Note: You must include a copy of your transcripts.

Must have courses equivalent to a major as described above (e.g., 24 semester hours) in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or a discipline closely related to biology; PLUS appropriate experience or additional course work. The quality of the combination must demonstrate that you possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the work of the position and is comparable to that normally acquired through the completion of a full four-year course of study with a major as described above. Note: you must submit a copy of your transcripts. Note: You must include a copy of your transcripts and indicate the number of hours worked per week within your resume.

In addition to the basic requirement listed above, and to qualify for this position at the GS-09 grade level, you must possess the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:

For the GS-09:
EXPERIENCE: Must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to successfully perform the duties of this position. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include duties such as: Professional work involving one or more aspects of biology including designing and implementing research and/or monitoring projects for the conservation and management of wildlife; conducting field studies on wildlife; gathering scientific data; performing data analyses; preparing reports, publications for peer-review, and presentations; and making recommendations to management. Note: You must indicate the number of hours worked per week within your resume.

EDUCATION: Must have successfully completed at least two years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree, or master's, or equivalent graduate degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or a discipline closely related to biology, or physical science, engineering or mathematics or directly related fields, which is directly related to the work of this position and demonstrates possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this position. Note: You must provide a copy of your transcripts with your application package to support your claim.

EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION COMBINATION: Must have a combination of graduate education and specialized experience of the type and level described above in a field directly related to the work of this position as shown above. For example, I have 6 months of the specialized experience described (50% of the experience requirement), and 36 semester hours or 54 quarter hours of directly-related graduate level college study as defined above in an accredited institution (50% of the qualifying education). Note: You must provide a copy of your transcripts with your application package to support your claim and indicate the number of hours worked per week within your resume.

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Demands: The position may require strenuous physical activity including periods of standing, walking, climbing, and lifting and carrying heavy objects. Some activities will occur in physically dangerous areas or settings. Documentary research and report writing work is sedentary, entails
the ability to concentrate and write for long periods of time.

Work Environment: Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather. Assignments may be performed in potentially hazardous areas including steep slopes, rocky terrain, volcanoes, caves, fire lines, arctic environments, swamps, deserts, and forests. Flying in fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters is possible.

Education

Non-Competitive Rehire Eligibility: Temporary seasonal employees can only maintain their non-competitive rehire eligibility if they work no more than a combined total of Temporary NTE less than 1040 hours anywhere in the National Park Service (NPS) within their established service year. Accordingly, non-competitive rehire eligibility allows for re-appointment to the same position or another position appropriate for temporary appointment with the same qualification requirements (5 CFR 316.402[b][7]), based on series and grade, anywhere in the major subdivision (NPS).

If you have held a temporary seasonal appointment in the past 12 months and have already worked the maximum temporary appointment less than 1040 hours during that period, you are still welcome to apply. However, please be aware that exceeding the limit of 1040 hours in your established service year will result in the loss of your non-competitive rehire eligibility.

The limit can be exceeded by working multiple temporary seasonal positions that result in a combined total greater than 1040 hours. The limit also can be exceeded by working a single temporary seasonal appointment that exceeds 1040 hours, unless granted an exception by OPM.

ICTAP/CTAP: Current surplus and current or former displaced Federal individuals who have special priority selection rights under the Agency Career Transition Assistance Program (CTAP) or the Interagency Career Transition Assistance Program (ICTAP) must be well qualified for the position to receive consideration for special priority selection.
