This position is being filled via the Alaska Nat'l Interest Lands Conservation Act (ANILCA), local hire authority (16 USC 3198). Any U.S. Citizen who has acquired special knowledge or expertise regarding the natural or cultural resources of Glacier Bay Nat'l Park & Preserve, by reason of having lived or worked in or near the unit may apply. To be eligible your resume must clearly show periods of time having lived or worked in or near the area of consideration (see qualifications section).
Join the National Park Service (NPS) team at Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve as an Ecologist. In this role, you will serve as a technical advisor in ecology to apply a systems approach to the study and analysis of organisms and ecological relationships, as well as program development and implantation. Major duties include:
Conducting research and monitoring of park natural resources, effects of park and visitor activities on resources, and evaluating and meeting the park's need for information to make intelligent resource management decisions.
Conducting vessel-based field data collection for multiple natural resource programs.
Assisting with biological and physical data collection relevant to the terrestrial ecosystems of Southeast Alaska.
Taking accurate and thorough field notes about ecological observation, and entering, organizing, and analyzing data with attention to detail.
Operating GPS units, data collection phones, and uses Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, Program R and ArcGIS.
Participating in outreach and technical advisement concerning wildlife and wilderness management to park employees, researchers, visitors and the local tribes and communities.
Communicating technical knowledge and results to a variety of audiences, through co-authorship of technical publications, including report and journal articles, presentations to technical or non-technical audiences.
Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.

Additional information

Physical Demands: The position may require strenuous physical activity including periods of standing, walking, climbing, and lifting and carrying heavy objects. Some activities will occur in physically dangerous areas or settings. Documentary research and report writing work is sedentary, entails the ability to concentrate and write for long periods of time.
Working Conditions: Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather. Assignments may be performed in potentially hazardous areas including steep slopes, rocky terrain, volcanoes, caves, fire lines, arctic environments, swamps, deserts, and forests. Flying in fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters is possible.
Alaska currently does not have a state income tax.
Selectee may be moved between duty stations within park boundaries.
