The Pacific West Region is recruiting for TEMPORARY seasonal positions not to exceed 6 months (1,039 hours) work in a service year. Dates of employment will vary depending on funding, weather conditions and visitation. Within regulatory limitations, the length of initial appointment may be shortened or extended depending on work availability and funding.
The major duties of the Physical Scientist position include, but are not limited to, the following:
Provide technical support in GIS and GPS to a wide variety of skill/knowledge levels in GIS AND wide variety of needed uses of GIS data and applications.
Collect, develop and manage GIS data according to specific procedures and industry best practices for park management and decision making.
Share GIS data as geospatial data services and develop and share web mapping applications displaying GIS data.
Design, develop, test, and implement scientific monitoring protocols to determine resource condition.
Physical Demands: The position may require strenuous physical activity including periods of standing, walking, climbing, and lifting and carrying heavy objects. Some activities will occur in physically dangerous areas or settings. Documentary research and report writing work is sedentary, entails the ability to concentrate and write for long periods of time.
Working Conditions: Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather. Assignments may be performed in potentially hazardous areas including steep slopes, rocky terrain, volcanoes, caves, fire lines, arctic environments, swamps, deserts, and forests. Flying in fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters is possible. The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval.

You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: To qualify for this position in the 1301 Physical Sciences job series, you must possess the following basic qualifications by close of the announcement:
Successfully completed a degree in one of the major fields of study: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics. You must include transcripts. OR
Possess a combination of education and experience that includes education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education. You must include hours per week worked on your resume as well as a copy of your transcripts.

EXPERIENCE: at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience includes online and mobile Geographic Information Systems and mobile data collection. Experience in the documentation of procedures and protocols concerning GIS data processes and data collection/management. Experience in data collection for positional/mapping that includes protocols for restricted and/or sensitive data. Experience in data collection for positional/mapping data that includes protocols for enterprise data systems. You must include hours/week worked.

EDUCATION: a master's or equivalent graduate degree or two (2) full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree from an accredited college or university in physical science, physics, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to this position. COMBINATION: of education and experience as described above that, when converted to percentages, equal at least 100% of the total requirement. To combine education and experience, divide your total months of experience by 12.
