The Pacific West Region is recruiting for TEMPORARY seasonal positions not to exceed 1039 hours work in a service year. Dates of employment will vary depending on funding, weather conditions, and visitation. Within regulatory limitations, the length of initial appointment may be shortened or extended depending on work availability and funding.

The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period for PWR Seasonal Recruitment is April-May, but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty: April 2026.

The duty stations for the parks are:

As a Health Technician (Paramedic), you perform a wide range of emergency medical services (EMS) to include:

  • Provide patient care according to local EMS protocols and prepare accurate written documentation of all EMS incidents.
  • Operate ambulances and other emergency vehicles in a safe and skilled manner.
  • Maintain EMS and rescue equipment in a response-ready state and regularly perform related work projects as assigned during daily shift.
  • Perform patient care in a variety of rugged environments involving lifting, moving and carrying for extended periods with exposure to extremes in temperature and uneven terrain.
  • Perform search and rescue operations in remote and technical environments, often carrying heavy loads for long distances.
  • May perform as a member of a team aboard helicopters during medical evacuations and rescue operations.
  • Work safely and effectively, utilizing PPE (personal protective equipment) and proper work practices, while performing in hazardous work environments including motor vehicle accidents, structural fires, HAZMAT, plane crashes and mass-casualty incidents.
  • Perform tasks as assigned under incident command system (ICS) and interact routinely with outside agency emergency personnel.
Mount Rainier National Park is located in southeast Pierce County and northeast Lewis County in Washington State. The park encompasses 236,381; it rises abruptly from the surrounding land with elevations in the park ranging from 1,600 feet to over 14,000 feet. Over two million people visit Mount Rainier each year. Eatonville Washington is the closest community providing a medical clinic and grocery store 44 miles from Paradise. Yosemite National Park is known worldwide for its spectacular beauty is the backdrop for this position. Sitting in Sierra Nevada Mountains in California, the park covers 1,182 square miles of varied wilderness ecosystems, from river valleys to alpine meadows to lofty 13,000-foot-high peaks. Yosemite Valley is located 208 miles from San Francisco, 81 miles from Merced, and 94 miles from Fresno. Shopping, medical, postal and laundry services are available in the park. Elevation at the Valley floor is approximately 4,000 feet and 2,200 feet in El Portal. The park is open year-round with the majority of activities occurring during the busy season March through October.

CTAP/ICTAP Statement: Current surplus and current or former displaced Federal individuals who have special priority selection rights under the Agency Career Transition Assistance Program (CTAP) or the Interagency Career Transition Assistance Program (ICTAP) must be well qualified for the position to receive consideration for special priority selection.   • Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.

  • Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
  • You will be required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment. In addition, this position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use.
  • You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if management determines such need exists), you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying to your possession of a valid State issued driver's license that is current and has not been revoked, suspended, canceled, or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • You will be required to possess a current Paramedic certification.
  • You may be required to travel overnight away from home.
  • Government housing is available.
  • Incumbent must maintain good physical condition and be able to pass the Physical Exercise Battery (PEB) or applicable standards outlined in Director's Order/Reference Manual-57 NPS Occupational Medical Standards, Health and Fitness.
  • Travel, transportation & relocation expenses will not be paid. Relocation expenses will be the employee's responsibility.
  • Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.
  • The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework only during an emergency or natural disaster.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-12/12/2025-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience.

SELECTIVE FACTOR: These positions perform advanced emergency medical care in response to various accident scenes, rescue environments and other emergencies involving injury and illness. Certification requirements for the positions include:

  • CURRENT Paramedic certification/licensure through National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) OR a state agency with the ability to obtain NREMT Paramedic certification, AND current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification are required. Candidates who do not meet this requirement by close of this announcement will receive no further consideration for this position. You MUST provide copies of the certification with issue and expiration dates in your application materials.

To qualify for this position at the GS-07 grade level, you must possess the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:


EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: 1) obtaining patient vital signs and performing venipuncture and initiating intravenous (IV) therapy; 2) using various types of medical emergency equipment (e.g., EKG, telemetry/defibrillator, suction, etc.); 3) determining the basic causes and medical implications of closed and open soft tissue wounds; and 4) stabilizing patients per established protocols. You must include hours per week worked on your resume.

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.

Non-Competitive Rehire Eligibility: Temporary seasonal employees can only maintain their non-competitive rehire eligibility if they work no more than a combined total of Temporary NTE less than 1040 hours anywhere in the National Park Service (NPS) within their established service year. Accordingly, non-competitive rehire eligibility allows for re-appointment to the same position or another position appropriate for temporary appointment with the same qualification requirements (5 CFR 316.402[b][7]), based on series and grade, anywhere in the major subdivision (NPS).

If you have held a temporary seasonal appointment in the past 12 months and have already worked the maximum temporary appointment less than 1040 hours during that period, you are still welcome to apply. However, please be aware that exceeding the limit of 1040 hours in your established service year will result in the loss of your non-competitive rehire eligibility.

The limit can be exceeded by working multiple temporary seasonal positions that result in a combined total greater than 1040 hours. The limit also can be exceeded by working a single temporary seasonal appointment that exceeds 1040 hours, unless granted an exception by OPM.

Employment may be terminated at any time due to fluctuations in funding levels, project needs, employee performance, or other considerations.

Physical Demands: You must maintain good physical condition and meet applicable standards. Work demands range from some periods of office work (walking, standing, sitting and lifting) to strenuous periods of extended and extreme physical and mental activity. EMS and search and rescue activities performed involve walking long distances over rough terrain, carrying heavy loads, and using technical rescue equipment. Going without sleep for long periods of time is a common occurrence. Incumbent must be able to fly in a helicopter or fixed wing aircraft without ill effects. The work involves extended periods of heavy moving and lifting of patients.

Working Conditions: Work is performed in an office setting, classroom, in the field, on trails, and in remote backcountry settings. On a regular and recurring basis employee is required to work in all types of weather conditions. EMS work involves frequent exposure to hazardous environments, hazardous flight landings and takeoffs, extremes in temperature, and exposure to communicable diseases. The employee is required to comply with use of various levels of personal protective clothing and special safety and health precautions.
