The primary purpose of the position is to operate one or more motor vehicles.

Duties

Help

The major duties of the Motor Vehicle Operator position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Operate motor vehicles including platform trucks, van trucks, stake trucks, dump trucks, specialty pumping equipment and trash.
  • Drive vehicles over public roads at highway speeds to transport passengers, supplies, materials or equipment and tools or to tow equipment throughout rural and urban areas.
  • Operate vehicles over rough terrain, in close quarters and in heavy traffic on both long and short hauls.
  • Perform routine preventative maintenance such as checking and adding fluids to bring to proper levels, checking air pressure and adding when required.
  • Perform semi-skilled and unskilled maintenance, repair and janitorial work in and on various unit buildings

  • Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
  • You will be required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment. In addition, this position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use.
  • You must possess and maintain a current Class B or higher Commercial Driver's License .
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 1 nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
  • Government Charge Card: You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
  • The position is considered essential during emergency situation.

To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:

Condition of Employment (SCREEN OUT): You must possess and maintain a current Class B (or higher) Commercial Driver's License with air break endorsement.

Additional information

Physical Demands: Moderate to heavy physical effort in climbing on tractors to hook up service lines, lower landing gears, and in climbing on the trailer to load or tie down cargo. Considerable physical effort may be required in backing of vehicles, to change tires, and make limited emergency repairs. Required to frequently lift items weighing over 50 pounds. Climbing of ladders, scaffolding, and working in and around equipment and power tools.

Working Conditions: Majority of the work is performed outdoors where incumbent will be exposed to extreme hot and cold temperatures. Required to operate equipment in all types of weather conditions on a variety of road surfaces. Subject to noise, vibration and exhaust fumes from equipment and vehicles, and is exposed to the danger of serious accidents.

The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable NOT for telework.

A selectee receiving a first appointment to the Federal Government (Civil Service) is entitled only to the lowest step of the grade for which selected. The display of a salary range on this vacancy shall not be construed as granting an entitlement to a higher rate of pay.

Continued Condition of Employment For Probationary Period: As a condition of employment for accepting this position, you will be required to serve a 1-year probationary period during which your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest will be evaluated. This probationary period is an extension of the appointment process and therefore requires the agency to determine if continued employment would advance the public interest, meet the organization goals and mission of the agency, and/or otherwise promote the efficiency of the service.
