The Pacific West Region is recruiting for TEMPORARY seasonal positions not to exceed 1039 hours work in a service year. Dates of employment will vary between sites depending on funding, weather conditions and visitation. Within regulatory limitations, the length of initial appointment may be shortened or extended depending on work availability and funding.
This position serves as an Engineering Equipment Operator in any organizational unit within the National Park Service (NPS). The primary purpose of this position is to operate gasoline or diesel-powered engineering and construction heavy equipment to grade surfaces to rough specifications on all types of terrain, to include mountains and steep slopes, graded curves and shoulders, hilly forests, rocky ground, and other surfaces with similar rough features. While the position may operate equipment to grade surfaces to fine specifications on flat or rolling terrain, at this level the incumbent does not grade surfaces to fine specifications on steep or mountainous terrain. The equipment operated at this level typically include road graders, crawlers, tractors with bulldozer or angledozer blades, backhoes, front-end loaders, excavators, wheel loaders, trench diggers, skid steers, and large industrial tractors with pan or scraper attachments. The incumbent may perform other duties in a variety of trades at the same or lower grade level, however the primary intent and purpose of the position is the operation of engineering equipment.
The engineering equipment operated by this position meet the definition of a commercial motor vehicle, and the incumbent of the position is required to possess and maintain a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements. This license must be obtained prior to being assigned operator duties. This position is subject to the requirements of the Department of Transportation (DOT) drug and alcohol testing program and is identified as a Testing Designated Position (TDP) due to the position operating motor vehicles requiring a CDL. The incumbent is also required to wear all applicable Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) associated with the job.
Engineering Equipment Operators operates heavy gasoline or diesel-powered engineering equipment to accomplish heavy construction and/or excavation work to grade surfaces to rough specifications on all types of terrain, to include mountains and steep slopes, graded curves and shoulders, hilly forests, rocky ground, and other surfaces with similar rough features. Operate heavy engineering equipment such as road graders, crawlers, tractors with bulldozer or angle dozer blades, backhoes, front-end loaders, excavators, wheel loaders, trench diggers, skid steers, and large industrial tractors with pan or scraper attachments. Some of these vehicles may be equipped with attachments (e.g., blades, grapple buckets, augers, breakers, hammers, tillers, brush cutters, trenchers, rakes, compactors, rotary snow blowers, mowers, rippers, sweepers, or sanding units). May operate equipment on flat or rolling terrain to grade surfaces, compact soils, or roll to exact specifications/grade stakes set by engineers (or others) where surface conditions are relatively constant.
Operates equipment on mountainous or steep terrain to excavate, backfill, grade, or level earth to rough specifications on such projects as breaking new ground for park trails, roads, culverts, canals, tunnels, or construction sites. Operate road graders to grade and ditch and plow or clear debris and brush; end loaders to move dirt and materials, plow snow, and/or fill trucks; backhoes to dig and backfill ditches; dozers to rough in new construction sites; and/or other equipment to rip ice, sand icy road surfaces, stockpile gravel and woodchips, remove stumps, move rocks, clear brush and understory species, perform land fill maintenance, mitigate erosion, and/or remove sand, snow, or debris from roads and parking lots during winter months and following weather events. Operate a boom for placing pipe, hydrants, and other large objects in utility and road maintenance operations throughout the park unit. Hook up attachments, use booms, and/or adjust engineering equipment settings for level, angle, or depth. Load, secure, and drive equipment to and from project sites. Perform pre-trip safety inspections on engineering equipment, and document and report deficiencies to the higher-level operator and/or supervisor.

Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
You will be required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment. In addition, this position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use.
You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
You must possess and maintain a currentClass A (or higher) Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with hazardous material and tanker endorsements and no air brake restriction.
You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
Incumbent is also required to wear all applicable Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) associated with the job.
You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime and travel up to 2 nights per month.
Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

NOTE:
Physical Demands: Heavy physical effort is required in constantly climbing in and out of different machines, pushing and pulling levers continuously while machine is in operation, and lifting such items as opening and closing tail gates on dump trucks. Work is strenuous because of the large equipment operated, the frequent adjustments made, and the adverse operating conditions. Considerable strain is caused by the constant vibration of the equipment and the jerking and jolting from operating over rough surfaces. The incumbent is required to frequently lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds, and often puts forth similar effort when pushing, pulling, turning, and positioning parts, assemblies, equipment, and tools.
Working Conditions: This position is required to perform work both inside and outside with most of the work performed outside. The incumbent works in rain, mud, snow, and in hot/cold temperatures and is frequently exposed to irritation or discomfort from noise, vibration, dust, dirt, fumes, exhaust, oils, heat, cold, and dampness. The operation of large and complicated equipment in difficult circumstances increases the incumbent's exposure and risk of injury. The incumbent is frequently subjected to the possibility of receiving cuts, abrasions, bruises, and strains while servicing and operating equipment. When working inside, the incumbent must ensure proper ventilation. The incumbent is required to follow prescribed safety practices and use safety equipment such as protective hearing devices and hard hats.

There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.
