Summary

Help

Major Duties of this position include:

  • Perform simple and routine maintenance and repair of grounds, exterior structures, buildings, equipment and related utilities. Utilize a variety of materials, tools, and equipment associated with the repair and maintenance of such.
  • Assists with the maintenance and preservation of historic and non-historic structures. This position requires skills applied to the maintenance, stabilization, restoration, repair and/or reconstruction of various historic and non-historic masonry and adobe structures.
  • Performs carpentry/woodworking tasks such as reconstruction, restoring or rehabilitating wood structures (rafters, doors, windows, trusses, beams, interior and exterior trim etc.).
  • Assist other higher-graded employees under general supervision in preservation work, general landscaping and grounds maintenance, basic carpentry, simple electrical installations or repairs, basic plumbing work, and painting interior and exterior surfaces, and perform a variety of janitorial services.
  • Operates a light truck to pick up supplies and to transport materials to and from work sites while assisting on project work.
  • Assists with the setup of complex scaffolding systems.
  • Performs simple and basic research of records pertaining to historic and/or prehistoric structures for the purpose of assessing their physical condition, style, preservation needs, and conservation work required.
  • Performs painting tasks which includes surface preparation and mixing of paints to approximate color and texture of historic paints and stains.

Working Conditions, e.g., outdoors, heavy lifting, etc.
The position requires working outdoors and indoors in all types of weather, and in temperature extremes from the low 30's to over 110 degrees F. Works in areas that are dusty, dirty, and greasy and is exposed to solvents, noxious gasses and fumes. Is exposed to venomous snakes and insects. Work requires frequent bending, stooping, walking, climbing and standing, and in cramped positions. Work requires lifting and moving heavy items up to 50 pounds, use of ladders, and is subject to falls, cuts, bruises and electrical shocks.


Incumbent of this position will be required to wear a uniform. Tour of duty may include weekends and holidays; daily schedules vary between 6:00 a.m. and 5:00p.m.

Area Information:
Casa Grande Ruins National Monument is conveniently located halfway between Phoenix and Tucson in the friendly city of Coolidge, Arizona. Shopping/medical are available in Coolidge one (1) mile from park headquarters. Full range of shopping, medical, dental and recreational facilities available in Casa Grande (18 mi.), Phoenix area (50 mi.) and Tucson (60 mi.). Kindergarten through senior high school available in Coolidge. Day care is available in Coolidge. A college is located between Coolidge and Casa Grande, 10 mi. from Coolidge. In addition, there are several other points of interest within a 35-mile radius of Coolidge such as Picacho Peak State Park, the Historic Town of Florence, Boyce Thompson Southwestern Arboretum, Lost Dutchman State Park in the Superstition Mountains and Huhugam Heritage Center. No government quarters available.

  • Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

Non-Competitive Rehire Eligibility: Temporary seasonal employees can only maintain their non-competitive rehire eligibility if they work no more than a combined total of Temporary NTE less than 1040 hours anywhere in the National Park Service (NPS) within their established service year. Accordingly, non-competitive rehire eligibility allows for re-appointment to the same position or another position appropriate for temporary appointment with the same qualification requirements (5 CFR 316.402[b][7]), based on series and grade, anywhere in the major subdivision (NPS).

If you have held a temporary seasonal appointment in the past 12 months and have already worked the maximum temporary appointment less than 1040 hours during that period, you are still welcome to apply. However, please be aware that exceeding the limit of 1040 hours in your established service year will result in the loss of your non-competitive rehire eligibility.

The limit can be exceeded by working multiple temporary seasonal positions that result in a combined total greater than 1040 hours. The limit also can be exceeded by working a single temporary seasonal appointment that exceeds 1040 hours, unless granted an exception by OPM.

Employment may be terminated at any time due to fluctuations in funding levels, project needs, employee performance, or other considerations.

Physical Demands: The physical effort required is considered heavy to moderate and requires lifting or handling of objects or materials up to 50 pounds unassisted, and occasionally lifting or moving heavier items with the assistance of a lifting device or other workers. The incumbent is required to work while standing, stooping, bending, crouching and climbing in tiring, awkward, and uncomfortable positions, and in all manners of environmental conditions. When working from a ladder or scaffolds, work involves reaching overhead, stretching or other awkward positions. Occasionally work is performed beneath buildings where the work area is cramped and dark, or work may be done from highly elevated platforms. Sometimes long hikes while carrying a backpack may be essential as is the possibility of technical climbing into some sites.

Working Conditions: General work Is done at prehistoric and historic structures and ruins throughout the park. Often these are in backcountry locations with difficult access that may require rappelling and the use of scaffold and ladder systems. The structures and ruins may be extremely deteriorated and structurally unsound, and therefore considered hazardous. The work is often extremely dusty and direct and of such nature that protective equipment and clothing such as hard hats, safety shoes, goggles, respirators, and ear protection are required, whether working indoors and outdoors. Some work is performed in the shop area where incumbent is exposed to moderate or high noise levels from operating machinery, saw dust in the air, fumes, and hazards associated with power equipment or preservatives. Occasionally the work may be performed outside under adverse weather conditions. Other environmental factors such as stinging and biting insects, snakes, and poisonous plants can be encountered. Assignments could involve working with hazardous materials, such as rodent nests, asbestos, and lead-based products, etc. To reduce the dangers, the incumbent is required to follow prescribed safe practices.
