This WG-3603-05 Mason Helper position is part of the Facility Maintenance Division, located at Zion National Park in Springdale, Utah. This is a permanent, full-time, Career-Seasonal position, subject to non-pay up to 4 pay periods (8 weeks) each year, scheduled between late December and early February. Career-Seasonal appointments include the same benefits as year-round Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis.

Major Duties: This position works as an assistant, receiving close supervision and specific instruction on assigned tasks to maintain, repair, and stabilize structures and surfaces of brick, stone, block and other related materials. Under direct supervision may perform the following duties:

  • Mixing masonry mortar recipes as prescribed;
  • Removing damaged portions of walls or other similar architectural features in preparation for repair of damage and stabilization of original fabric;
  • Implementing prescribed preservation treatments (capping, veneering, re-pointing, resetting, new laying, etc.); and/or
  • Recording the location, time, materials, and labor involved in the treatment process.

Physical Effort: This position may be required to perform masonry work from ladders, scaffolds, platforms, and other cramped and hard-to-reach places. Duties require the incumbent to sit, stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, crawl, and work in uncomfortable positions. If the incumbent is assigned to perform masonry work in remote locations, the incumbent may be required to walk, hike, climb, or drive over rough and uneven terrain. The incumbent is expected to lift and/or carry items up to 50 pounds unassisted, and occasionally up to 100 pounds in weight with assistance.

Working Conditions: Most work is performed outside with exposure to all types of harsh weather conditions. Work outside may be subject to extreme weather conditions, with wind, rain, snow, and ice, in temperatures ranging from below 0 to over 100 degrees. Depending on the geography of the park unit assigned, work may take place at elevations ranging from sea level up to 10,000 feet or in or near bodies of water. The incumbent may be regularly exposed to dust, dirt, fogs, mists, gases, smokes, sprays, and vapors, as well as noise, vibration, cuts, bruises, and abrasions from the use of masonry tools, vehicles, hoists, conveyer belts, cranes, and other equipment. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to hazardous materials that can cause skin, eye, and respiratory irritation and burns, as well as microbiological organisms and potentially hazardous wildlife. The incumbent is subject to the danger of falling when on ladder or scaffolding, and broken bones as a result of accidents while driving or when loading and unloading equipment and materials. The incumbent is expected to comply with all safety and occupational health requirements and wear protective clothing, gloves, face shields, and in some cases a respirator that may be uncomfortable.

You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
  • UNIFORM: You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • WORK SCHEDULE: You may be required to work overtime.
  • PROBATIONARY PERIOD: If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old.
  • Able to lift and/or carry up to 50 pounds unassited, and occasionally up to 100 pounds with assistance.

To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:

  2. Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment.

  4. Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic).

There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.

Additional information

Zion National Park is located in southwestern Utah. The climate is generally hot with daytime high temperatures ranging from 95 to 110 degrees in the summer, and 55 to 10 degrees in the winter. Nighttime lows range from 65 degrees in the summer to 10 degrees in the winter. Minimal shopping is available in Springdale, Utah, located two (2) miles from Park Headquarters. A full range of shopping, medical, dental, religious, and recreational facilities are available in Hurricane (25 miles), St. George, (45 miles), and in Cedar City, (63 miles), Utah. Elementary school (grades K-5) is available in Springdale, with bus service provided. Junior high and high school is available in Hurricane, with bus service provided. Utah Tech University is located in St. George, and Southern Utah University is located in Cedar City. **Due to the desirable nature of the area surrounding Zion National Park, please be sure to research and understand the limited housing options and the area's cost-of-living.**

Park/Government housing is not available for this position.
