Summary

This position is located at Independence National Historical Park in Philadelphia, PA. The primary purpose of this position is to lead a crew of employees responsible for performing janitorial, custodial and laborer work, while completing various assigned cleaning tasks from the Custodial Supervisor. The incumbent will perform their gardener work based on seasonal schedules, or project plans.

Duties

Help

  • Keeps in touch with status and progress of work and makes day-to-day adjustments in accordance with established priorities, obtaining assistance from the supervisor on problems that may arise, such as backlogs that cannot be disposed promplty.
  • Able to make independent decisions and direct onsite actions of maintenance staff in accordance with the assigned responsibilities and without direct input from management staff.
  • Assist supervisor with providing evaluation, oversight, and direction to contractors.
  • Performs duties primarly on second or third shift. Determine on site methods to be used in the accomplishment of assignments issued by the higher level supervisor, passing onto other workers instructions and needed information or decisions received from supervisors and amkes site adjustments as needed. Checking work, including safety, to be sure it is done properly.
  • Lead snow team with shoveling ice and snow from sidewalks, steps, and curbs throughout the park. Spreads salt and sand to speed up ice melting and proved traction for walking. Incumbent is a member of the park snow and ice removal team (Snow Team), responding to winter and destructive weather events.

  • You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
  • You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • Occupancy of government quarters is not available.
  • If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.

Screen out: Ability to perform regular and recurring work leading a crew of workers performing manual labor tasks including using heavy power equipment, e.g. industrial mowers, snow blowers, and tillers. I distributed and balanced workload among crew members, communicated work assignments, demonstrated proper work methods, and monitored work progress. I reported work progress to my supervisor and made recommendations concerning work operations and problems.

Physical Demands: The work performed requires the exertion of moderate to very heavy physical effort. The work involves lifting and moving objects over 50 pounds, and in some cases, carrying 80 to 100 pounds (or more) with assistance.

Working Conditions: Outside work is usually performed under all kinds of weather conditions. Indoor work is often accomplished in office buildings or well-lighted, heated, and ventilated areas such as warehouses, loading docks, or trade shops. Frequently exposed to weather and temperature extremes, drafts, noise, dirt, and dust and possibility of bruises, muscle strains, and scrapes.
