Summary

The primary purpose of this position is to perform work of a limited scope or difficulty involved in the maintenance and repair of grounds, exterior structures, buildings, and related utilities, and to assist journeyman or other higher graded maintenance workers in performing more difficult assignments associated with occupations such as carpentry, masonry, plumbing, electrical, cement work, painting, roofing, and other related trades.

Help

  • Maintenance and repair of all the parks, visitor centers, structures, campgrounds, trails and facilities.
  • Maintains tools and equipment.
  • Maintains, repairs or replaces painting, carpentry, masonry, electrical, plumbing and utilities throughout the park. Works independently or assisting higher graded employees.
  • Operates a light truck, picks up supplies and transport materials to and from work sites.
  • Works outside, inside, and in sometimes harsh weather conditions during regular performance of duties.

  • Direct Deposit: Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
  • Driver's License: You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
  • Water Operation: This position requires that the incumbent possess certification from the Commonwealth of Virginia, Waterworks Operator - Class 6. This certification includes a minimum of 6 months experience at a level 6 public water system.
  • Uniform: You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • Probationary Period: If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.

To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:

Additional Selections: This announcement may be used to fill additional positions if identical vacancies occur within 90 days of the issue date of the referral certificate.

Physical Demands: Works from ladders, scaffolds and platforms and where surfaces to be coated, or the parts of systems worked on are hard to reach, requiring the incumbent stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts, carries, and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 40 pounds.

Working Conditions: Work is performed inside and outside where dirt, spray, and fumes are present. Also required to work in inclement weather and/or wear protective equipment and clothing that are sometimes heavy and uncomfortable. Must possess a valid State's driver license.

A selectee receiving a first appointment to the Federal Government (Civil Service) is entitled only to the lowest step of the grade for which selected. The display of a salary range on this vacancy shall not be construed as granting an entitlement to a higher rate of pay.
