Duties

Help

This position is in the maintenance division of Agate Fossil Beds National Monument. The position requires working knowledge of a variety of maintenance duties, including painting, carpentry, plumbing, equipment operation, landscaping, cutting grass, plowing snow, janitorial duties, etc. This position serves as the lead operator for the water system, which includes sampling, maintenance, and administration of the well systems within the park.
Repairs and maintains historic buildings, government housing, support structures and other park assets within accepted safety, health, and sanitary conditions.
Uses and maintains a variety of equipment including gasoline-powered pickup truck with front-attached snowplow, zero-turn riding mower, large Tool Cat with forklift, small Bob Cat with forklift, and a full-sized tractor. Uses a variety of hand tools including drills, saws, hammers, table saws, wrenches, weed whackers, leaf blowers, etc.
Perform plumbing on potable water and wastewater systems and related equipment such floats, fittings, sinks, toilets, and fixtures.
Performs janitorial duties including cleaning restrooms and emptying trash and recycling receptacles.
Incumbent will utilize basic computer skills daily, such as word processing; internet-based communication and training; and internet-based facility management i.e. the Facility Management Software System (FMSS). Incumbent will perform FMSS data collection and input, by use of computer and handheld portable devices.
Assists in planning and estimating time and materials for projects and computerized maintenance systems.
This is not a supervisory position, but the incumbent will provide general direction, guidance, and advice to one or two seasonal maintenance employees.
Works independently without technical supervision. Conducts assessments and makes recommendations to ensure all work is conducted safely. Takes required trainings in safety and operational leadership. This position may serve as a Contracting Officer's Representative or Technical Representative for service and construction contracts.

  • You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
  • You will be required to complete a one-year trial period.
  • You must possess and maintain a Nebraska Grade V Water Operators License, within 6 months upon entrance of duty date.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds.
  • Government housing may be available.

To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:
(SCREEN OUT) This position requires that the incumbent possess a Driver's License.
(SCREEN OUT) Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision for the Maintenance Mechanic, WG-4749-9 position at the journeyman level. At this level, I perform the work with a high level of independence. I have performed at this level in two of the following trades: Carpentry, Plumbing, Painting, Masonry, Water Treatment Plant Operations, or Roofing.

A Recruitment Incentive May Be Authorized for a newly selected employee when appointed to a permanent, temporary, or term position. A Federal employee who is transferring to the National Park Service from another component, bureau or Federal agency and who does not meet the conditions under 5 CFR 575.102 is not eligible for a recruitment incentive.

A Relocation Incentive May Be Authorized for a Federal employee when the employee must move, as directed by the National Park Service (NPS) either through a management directed reassignment or selection for employment, to a different location at least 50 miles away from the one where his/her position of record held at time of selection is currently located, due to a need of the NPS. A relocation incentive is not the same as a Permanent Change of Station (PCS) move and, as such, may be granted in conjunction with one another.

Physical Demands: Physical effort is heavy to moderate and requires occasional lifting or handling of objects or materials up to 50 pounds, unassisted, following proper lifting procedures to avoid injury. Frequently required to stand while working, climb ladders or scaffolding, and bend, stoop, climb, and work in awkward positions.

Working Conditions: Exposed to a variety of seasonal weather conditions while working outdoors (temperatures -40 to 90+ degrees). Subject to danger of falling from ladders or scaffolding. Exposed to dust, dirt, wind, and rain. May work with dangerous chemicals and around moving equipment; paints, solvents, etc. May be exposed to electrical shocks and biting insects.
