Duties:

Anticipated entry on duty date is around May 2025, but is dependent on candidate's academic calendar. Employment is for the summer of 2025 only, consisting of a minimum of 12 weeks up to a maximum of 6 months. However, an extension of the appointment to a period not-to-exceed one year may be possible, without further competition, when the student intern remains eligible for the program.


Pathways Internship positions provide for development and training. Assignments become more responsible as incumbent increases knowledge and skills through work experience and academic training. These positions are geared towards individuals interested in the engineering and construction of infrastructure projects of varying types. Under supervision and with guidance from park engineering and project management staff, the incumbent will learn about and assist with performing the following duties:
  • Serve as a team member engaged in the planning, design, and construction of repair and rehabilitation projects for park facilities and infrastructure
  • Perform detailed measurements of existing buildings and entering building construction data into databases
  • Complete field verification of spatial data records
  • Perform condition assessments and identifying deficiencies in existing facilities
  • Research and draft standard design and construction details for the park
  • Perform observation on active on construction sites
  • Analyze infrastructure systems for deficiencies or improvements
  • Assist with topographic survey and GIS mapping
At the GS-04 incumbent will work in an assistant capacity under closer supervision.

  • You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if management determines such need exists), you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying to your possession of a valid State issued driver's license that is current and has not been revoked, suspended, canceled, or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle. You will also submit a photocopy of your valid State issued driver's license prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year, or more frequently if management determines such need exists. Lastly, you may be required to submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that discloses all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. Please indicate in your application whether you possess a valid State driver's license.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • The entire period served under the Intern Program counts as a trial period.
  • You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 1 night per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
  • Government housing may be available.
  • Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-12/27/2024-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount qualified specialized experience.

Pathways Eligibility Requirements: In order to be eligible for an appointment under the Pathways Internship Program:

  • You must be a student accepted for enrollment or enrolled in a degree or certificate program on a full- or half-time basis as defined by the school (certificate program means post-secondary education, in a qualifying educational institution, equivalent to at least one academic year of full-time study that is part of an accredited college-level, technical, trade, vocational, or business school curriculum); AND
  • Enrollment is with a qualifying educational institution such as a high school or state-approved homeschool; or accredited technical or vocational school; a 2- or 4-year college or university; a graduate or professional school (e.g., law school, medical school); or a post-secondary home school curriculum; AND
  • Students currently enrolled must be in good academic standing, maintaining a 2.0 grade point average on a cumulative basis; AND
  • Provide proof of enrollment documentation as detailed in the 'Education' section.
You must continue to meet these eligibility requirements throughout the duration of your appointment under the Pathways Internship Program.

To qualify for this position at the GS-04 grade level you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement.


EDUCATION: Successfully completed at least two (2) full academic years above high school that included at least 12 semester hours in any combination of courses such as: civil engineering, environmental engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or other engineering discipline(s) equivalent to the aforementioned. You must include transcripts.

EXPERIENCE: Six (6) months of general work experience AND six (6) months of specialized work experience. General work experience is any type of work that demonstrates the ability to perform the work of the position, or experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation. Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position. Examples of specialized experience include technical work in: drafting, surveying, infrastructure design and evaluation, construction estimating, construction inspection, materials testing, architecture, civil, electrical or mechanical systems, etc. You must include hours per week worked.

COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: A combination of education as defined above, and work experience as defined above, that when combined equal 100% of the qualification requirements. (For example, 1 full year of education (50%), and 6 months of specialized experience as defined above (50%), equals 100% of the qualification requirements.) You must include transcripts.

To qualify for this position at the GS-05 grade level you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement.

EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least four (4) full years of study in a program leading to a bachelor's degree with either (a) major study in an appropriate field of engineering, construction, or industrial technology; or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as: civil engineering, environmental engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or other discipline(s) equivalent to the aforementioned. You must include transcripts.

EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities that equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position. Examples of specialized experience include technical work in: drafting, surveying, infrastructure design and evaluation, construction estimating, construction inspection, materials testing, architecture, civil, electrical, or mechanical systems, etc. You must include hours per week worked.

COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. (For example, 1 full year of education, in excess of the first 60 semester hours (50%), and 6 months of specialized experience as defined above (50%), equals 100% of the qualification requirements.) NOTE: Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree is creditable (two full academic years of study, or 60 semester hours, beyond the second year). You must include transcripts.

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

You will NOT be considered under Pathways unless you provide supporting information from your school. Documentation may be provided in letter format from your academic advisor, school counselor, admission office, etc. to prove enrollment OR it may be provided in the form of several official documents from your school such as a copy of your official transcripts and a copy of your class schedule for next semester. Copies of documents from your school website are acceptable if they contain all relevant information as listed above. Letters from advisors or other school officials must be on school letterhead.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.

If selected, you will be required to sign a Pathways Agreement which specifies the conditions of your employment as we've indicated in this job announcement. You must continue to meet the Pathways Program requirements throughout the duration of your appointment. To verify that you do, we will require proof of your continued enrollment and good standing each semester or grading period throughout your internship. Failure to do so will result in termination of your internship and employment.

Physical Demands: The work requires some physical exertion such as long periods of standing; walking over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces; recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities; and recurring lifting of moderately heavy items

Working Conditions: The work environment is comprised of the conventional office with periodic travel to project sites. The work involves moderate risk and exposure to moving equipment or machines, engine exhaust, associated high levels of noise, and outdoor weather conditions involving exposure to cold/hot, rain/sun, and a variety of other park conditions/features such as streams, rivers, or other bodies of water. Safety precautions may be required such as hard hats and steel toed boots.

The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval.
