Summary

As a Carpenter, you will work on a variety of Legacy Resource Fund projects designed to repair, replace, and rehabilitate historic structures in the Northeast Region.

This is a term position (more than 1 year) with an initial appointment to last at least 13 months but may be extended up to a total of nine years.

Duties

Help

As a Carpenter, WG-4607-09 with the National Park Service (NPS), your duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Constructs, installs, and repairs a variety of wooden items and structures, such as framework, rafters, windows and doors, paneling, cabinets, and trim.
  • Inspects work completed by others, including contractors, to ensure it meets trade standards and building codes.
  • Interprets blueprints and specifications to plan and complete carpentry projects.
  • Stabilizes or restores items such as door, windows, or flooring to ensure structural integrity.
  • Fabricates duplicate replacements of items such as molding, beams, or trim which require angled or curved cuts or where the final appearance is of great importance.

  • This term appointment is in support of the Great American Outdoors Act (GAOA), National Parks and Public Lands Legacy Restoration Fund (LRF). Term positions do not convey permanent status in the Federal Service.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-12/09/2024-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.

In order to be qualified for this position, you must possessthe ability to do the work of a carpenter with no more than occasional supervision to spot-check the quality of the work completed. You must be able to build wooden elements such as staircases, rafters, or building frames, where structural soundness is important, as well as build or install trim, paneling, or other wooden items where final appearance is a primary concern. You must be able to use and maintain hand and power tools of the carpentry trade to cut, shape, and join wood and wood products, and be skilled in making difficult cuts (e.g. bevels, sharp angles) and in the use of multiple joining techniques. You must be able to plan and layout carpentry projects independently.

There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.

A selectee receiving a first appointment to the Federal Government (Civil Service) is entitled only to the lowest step of the grade for which selected The display of a salary range on this vacancy shall not be construed as granting an entitlement to a higher rate of pay.

Physical Demands: Works in woodshops, other buildings, and at construction and repair sites. Climbs on ladders and scaffolds. Carry objects up to 40 pounds and occasionally lifts or moves items with the assistance of lifting devices or other workers. Required to stand for extended periods while operating machines such as bench planers, saws, and drill presses

Working Conditions: Works both inside and outside. Some work is performed in shop areas where worker is exposed to moderate to high noise levels and sawdust in the air, glue fumes, and hazards associated with woodworking and related power equipment. When working at job sites, may also be exposed to hazards associated while working on scaffolds or ladders or weather conditions when completing projects outdoors.
