Help

Duties include but are not limited to the following:

Leads and directs trail crew, (WG-3s, WG-5s, and WG-7s), YCC crew members and volunteers in maintenance of backcountry assets such as trails, airstrips, cabins, and camping areas. Leads a crew in operating and maintaining vehicles, tools and equipment. Independently plans and leads a crew in completing work using drawings, specifications, work orders, etc. consults with supervisor with recommendations on proper material use and qualities. Plans daily work schedules based on instructions drawings manuals and other documentation, following safety protocols at all times. Completes safety, risk management, employee performance/conduct, and other project reporting requirements on a regular basis.

Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will not be paid. All travel, transportation, and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the sole responsibility of the selected employees.

The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period for each duty station is listed below. These employment periods can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding.

Denali National Park and Preserve (DENA) - Denali Park, Alaska - Anticipated employment period is April - September. Anticipated Entry on Duty: April 2025.

Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve (WRST) - Glennallen, Alaska - Anticipated employment period is April - October. Anticipated Entry on Duty: April 2025.

Alaska currently does not have a state income tax.

These positions are temporary and may not exceed 1039 hours (six months) in a service year.

Individuals selected under this vacancy announcement are eligible for the possibility of extensions or rehire in subsequent service years.

Physical Demands at Denali Park: You will frequently experience moderate to heavy exertion during the use and transportation of materials and equipment. Heavy exertion is required to shovel heavy snow, carry and roll rocks and logs, to move rocks and tree stumps of several tons utilizing rock bars and hoists. You will frequently lift and carry objects weighing 20 to 100 pounds. You will hike up and down steep mountainous terrain, traveling up to 12 miles daily. Work requires extensive walking, standing, bending, kneeling, twisting, pushing, pulling, and working in awkward positions on uneven terrain. You will be required to wear protective equipment, such as a respirator, hearing protection, clothing and eye protection, and must meet physical requirements to do so.

Working Conditions at Denali Park: Work is performed outdoors approximately 80% of the time, in temperatures ranging from -40 degrees to 80 degrees Fahrenheit, often in periods of sunshine, rain, snow, sleet, or ice. Work requires travel on wet and slippery rocks, ice, snow, and at times crossing swift running water.
Outdoor work environment provides considerable exposure to potential insect activity, bee stings, poisonous plants, encounters with bears, and extreme cold temperatures, etc. You will use power equipment which makes excessive noise, vibration, and exhaust fumes. Trail work is hazardous in nature while falling and buckling trees, lifting and moving rocks, logs, and snow, etc.

Heavy exertion is required to carry and roll rocks and logs, to move rocks and tree stumps of several tons with rock bars and hoists. You will frequently lift and carry objects weighing 20-100 pounds. You will hike up and down steep terrain traveling up to 12 miles daily. Work requires extensive walking, standing, bending, kneeling, twisting, pushing, pulling, and working in awkward positions on uneven terrain. You will be required to wear protective equipment such as hearing protection, clothing and eye protection and must meet physical requirement to do so.

Working Conditions at Glennallen: Work is performed outdoors approximately 90% of the time in temperatures ranging from below 0 degrees to 80 degrees Fahrenheit often in periods of full sunshine to rain, snow, sleet or ice. Work requires crossing streams on wet and slippery rocks, at times with swift running water. The outdoor work environment provides considerable exposure to potential insect activity, bee stings, poisonous plants, and encounters with bears, etc. The leader uses power equipment which makes excessive noise, vibration, and exhaust fumes. Trail work is hazardous in nature while falling and bucking trees, lifting and moving rocks and logs, etc.

  • Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
  • You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 16 nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
  • You may be required to wear uniform.
  • You may be required to camp in the backcountry or remote areas of the park for up to 10 consecutive nights to complete projects.
  • You must maintain certification to safely operate chainsaws.
  • You must obtain and maintain current certification in CPR and basic First Aid (minimum) to operate power saw equipment and chainsaws.

A Recruitment Incentive May Be Authorized for a newly selected employee when appointed to a permanent, temporary, or term position. A Federal employee who is transferring to the National Park Service from another component, bureau or Federal agency and who does not meet the conditions under 5 CFR 575.102 is not eligible for a recruitment incentive.

A Relocation Incentive May Be Authorized for a Federal employee when the employee must move, as directed by the National Park Service (NPS) either through a management directed reassignment or selection for employment, to a different location at least 50 miles away from the one where his/her position of record held at time of selection is currently located, due to a need of the NPS. A relocation incentive is not the same as a Permanent Change of Station (PCS) move and, as such, may be granted in conjunction with one another.

Non-Competitive Rehire Eligibility: Temporary seasonal employees can only maintain their non-competitive rehire eligibility if they work no more than a combined total of Temporary NTE less than 1040 hours anywhere in the National Park Service (NPS) within their established service year. Accordingly, non-competitive rehire eligibility allows for re-appointment to the same position or another position appropriate for temporary appointment with the same qualification requirements (5 CFR 316.402[b][7]), based on series and grade, anywhere in the major subdivision (NPS).

If you have held a temporary seasonal appointment in the past 12 months and have already worked the maximum temporary appointment less than 1040 hours during that period, you are still welcome to apply. However, please be aware that exceeding the limit of 1039 hours in your established service year will result in the loss of your non-competitive rehire eligibility.

The limit can be exceeded by working multiple temporary seasonal positions that result in a combined total greater than 1039 hours. The limit also can be exceeded by working a single temporary seasonal appointment that exceeds 1039 hours, unless granted an exception by OPM.

Employment may be terminated at any time due to fluctuations in funding levels, project needs, employee performance, or other considerations.

The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval.
