Major Duties of this position include:

Leading a minimum of 3 masonry workers grade 7 and below. Incumbent may also lead VIPs, interns and/or YCC assigned to work area.
Leads other workers in mixing soils, water and amendments for mortars as prescribed.
Removing damaged portions of walls or other similar architectural features in preparation for repair of damage, stabilization and original fabric.
Implementing prescribed treatment techniques (capping, veneering, repointing, resetting, new construction etc.
Works with crew maintaining, repairing, and preserving structures which involves removal of damage, selecting and dressing replacement stones, laying stones, repointing mortar, repair and replacing veneers, replicating original architectural styles.

AREA / HOUSING INFORMATION: Saguaro National Park consists of two districts which are separated by the city of Tucson, Arizona, a metropolitan area of over 900,000. The park has 91,446 acres, of which 78% is designated Wilderness, yet it is directly influenced by the surrounding growth and development of Tucson. The impacts of large numbers of residents immediately adjacent to the boundary of the park, when combined with the workload generated by over 700,000 visitors per year, places major emphasis upon the effective execution of visitor services and resources protection operations as well as their coordination in an interagency/interjurisdictional environment. All urban services are readily available within the area.

You may be required to work weekends and holidays.
You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 16 nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
Government Charge Card: You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

Non-Competitive Rehire Eligibility: Temporary seasonal employees can only maintain their non-competitive rehire eligibility if they work no more than a combined total of Temporary NTE less than 1040 hours anywhere in the National Park Service (NPS) within their established service year. Accordingly, non-competitive rehire eligibility allows for re-appointment to the same position or another position appropriate for temporary appointment with the same qualification requirements (5 CFR 316.402[b][7]), based on series and grade, anywhere in the major subdivision (NPS).

If you have held a temporary seasonal appointment in the past 12 months and have already worked the maximum temporary appointment less than 1040 hours during that period, you are still welcome to apply. However, please be aware that exceeding the limit of 1040 hours in your established service year will result in the loss of your non-competitive rehire eligibility.

The limit can be exceeded by working multiple temporary seasonal positions that result in a combined total greater than 1040 hours. The limit also can be exceeded by working a single temporary seasonal appointment that exceeds 1040 hours, unless granted an exception by OPM.

Employment may be terminated at any time due to fluctuations in funding levels, project needs, employee performance, or other considerations.

Physical Demands: Heavy physical effort is required in bending, lifting, and using hand and power tools in masonry construction and maintenance. As examples of typical strenuous activity, incumbent: Frequently lifts and carries objects weighing over 90 lbs. unassisted and with assistance of objects over 100 lbs. Must carry and roll rocks and logs, move rocks of several tons with rock bars or rigging, use hammers to crush or shape rock, and use shovels and other hand tools extensively. Incumbent is continuously bending, reaching, stooping, pushing, and pulling object sometimes in unison with other members of the crew. Frequently hikes up to fifteen miles daily and must be able to do so while carrying up to fifty pounds in a backpack and carrying power and/or hand tools. All OSHA and RM50B safety practices will be adhered to, including wearing of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

Working Conditions: Temperature extremes encountered from 90-110 degrees F in Summer, and 20 to 60 degrees F in Winter. Terrain is steep, eroded, and rocky with unstable footing in order to reach most side job sites which can range from a hike of one to fifteen miles in a day. Hazards include exposure to snake bite, scorpion, and wasp stings, sun burn, bruises, cuts, scrapes, and cactus thorn punctures. Must have the ability to live and work in remote backcountry areas in close contact with small numbers of people for extended periods of time. This may require living and working out of a wilderness camp for up to 20 days a month. Must live and work out-of-doors on projects in mountainous and desert terrain at elevations between 2,500 and 8,500 feet in all extremes of adverse weather conditions. work is dusty and hazardous conditions may exist when moving rocks and logs, working in and around rockslide areas, working around livestock, and working around rigging equipment and machinery.

The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are not suitable for telework.
