Help

The primary purpose of this position is to perform maintenance, repair, and overhaul work on automobiles, trucks, tractors, and other vehicles and equipment including gasoline, diesel, and electric engines and other mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, computer-assisted and electronically controlled systems. Duties may include:

  • Replace solenoids, relays, control modules, pumps, injectors, brakes, wheel bearings, steering linkages, gaskets/hoses/belts, tires, etc.
  • Adjust brakes, transmission linkages, engine idle, control/sensing valves, etc.
  • Cleans/replaces filters, battery cables, engine components, heating and cooling devices.
  • Service/check air conditioning systems including purging and recharging systems, flushing radiators, etc.
  • Align front ends of cars and trucks by adjusting caster, camber, and setting toe-in.
  • Vehicle and equipment operation checks.
  • Remove/install accessory items such as lights, radios, gun racks, toolboxes, etc.
  • Inspect/repair/overhaul small engines and other components for mowers, weed eaters, cement mixers, ATVs, etc.
  • Maintain a neat and organized work area and assigned tools.
  • Prepares monthly reports, requisitions for supplies and parts, etc. using computer programs.

POSITION LOCATION: Shenandoah National Park preserves and protects more than 300 square miles of nationally significant natural and cultural resources, scenic beauty, and congressionally designated wilderness within Virginia's northern Blue Ridge Mountains; and provides a broad range of opportunities for public enjoyment, recreation, inspiration, and stewardship. Within just 90 miles of Washington D.C. the Park provides visitors the ability to explore mountain peaks, hidden hollows, cascading streams, accessible wilderness, and stunning natural beauty. Approximately 40% of the Park is designated wilderness with over 500 miles of hiking trails and the iconic Skyline Drive, SHEN was established as an eastern Park that provided a "western Park experience". Due to the Park's easy accessibility to D.C and other highly populated areas along the east coast, visitation exceeds 1.4 million visitors annually which results in significant resource protection and visitor management issues and incidents.

  • Direct Deposit: Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
  • Driver's License: You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You may also be required to submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
  • You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle.
  • Required to obtain/maintain Mobile HVAC Certification within 60 days of EOD.
  • Uniform: You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You occasionally may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • Government housing is not available.
  • Probationary Period: If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
  • You may occasionally be required to travel overnight away from home. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
  • Government Charge Card: You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
  • Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or
  • (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

Qualifications

The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Job Qualifications System for Trades and Labor Occupations (X-118-C) will be used in determining applicants' qualifications. There is no specific length of training or experience required; however, you must be able to demonstrate through the experience shown in your written resume and your responses to the questionnaire that you possess the competencies to perform the duties of this position without more than normal supervision.

To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:

A Relocation Incentive May Be Authorized for a Federal employee when the employee must move, as directed by the National Park Service (NPS) either through a management directed reassignment or selection for employment, to a different location at least 50 miles away from the one where his/her position of record held at time of selection is currently located, due to a need of the NPS. A relocation incentive is not the same as a Permanent Change of Station (PCS) move and, as such, may be granted in conjunction with one another.

Physical Demands: Requires making repairs which often require working in tiring, awkward, and uncomfortable positions, and the work performed frequently involves standing for long periods of time, bending, stooping, crawling under vehicles, and making repairs in other tight spaces. Required to frequently lift, handle, and carry parts and equipment weighting 40-50 pounds and occasionally moves moderately heavier items with assistance or with mechanical devices.

Working Conditions: Work is usually performed inside on concrete surfaces where there is exposure to drafts, noise and fumes from vehicles. Occasionally the work may be performed outisde under adverse weather conditions. May be continually exposed to dirt, dust, and grease, and to the potential for burns, chemical irrations, shocks, bruises, cuts, and strains. To reduce the dangers and irritations from these conditions, the incumbent follw prescribed safety practices and uses safety equipment such as safety shoes and glasses, and respirators.
