Help

Permanent Career Seasonal positions will work approximately: Bryce Canyon (mid-March to mid-February), Black Canyon (mid-April to mid-February) and Mesa Verde (February to December). You will be in a non-pay status for the remainder of the year.

Major Duties
This position performs the full range of custodial work including cleaning and servicing vault toilets, buildings, campgrounds, and emptying trash receptacles. These positions are required to operate a government vehicle to perform assigned work and may provide general labor assistance to others in the maintenance of buildings, grounds, roads, trails, etc. These are uniformed positions and must be able to respond to visitors politely.

Physical Demands:
Moderately heavy physical effort is required when: using ladder and scaffolds to clean walls, ceilings, windows, ceiling fixtures, etc.; operating powered equipment; removing cans of or other containers of trash; and occasionally lifts objects weighing over 50 pounds.

Working Conditions:
Usually works indoors in areas, which normally have adequate, heat, light, and ventilation. Is exposed to vibration from heavy equipment and to skin irritations from strong cleaning solutions used in stripping floors, etc. Care is required to avoid serious injuries when working on ladders and scaffolds and when using heavy powered equipment. Occasionally works outdoors in possible inclement weather conditions and/or extreme temperatures.

AREA INFORMATION
Bryce Canyon National Park:
Bryce Canyon, known for its amazing and colorful hoodoos, sits atop the Paunsaugunt Plateau in south-central Utah. Elevation is 8000-9000 feet. Winter temperatures average lows in the mid-teens and highs in the mid-30s; summer temperatures average lows in the 50s and highs in the 70s-80s. It is 20-30 minutes to the nearest small grocery stores located in Tropic and Panguitch, and an hour and a half to full services in the towns of Cedar City or Richfield.

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park:
The South Rim of Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is located 15 miles east of Montrose, Colorado. Montrose has a population of approximately 18,000 and regionally serves a population of 60,000. Most grocery, shopping, entertainment and medical services can be found there. The North Rim of the park is 7 miles from the town of Crawford, CO. The closest town for shopping is Hotchkiss or Delta, CO. The rock of Black Canyon is rugged steep and deep and offers some of the most challenging rock climbing in North America. The park is home to a rich variety of plants and wildlife, including mule deer, elk, and big horn sheep. There are abundant recreational opportunities in the area, including hiking, camping, fishing, river running, mountain biking, and many others from desert lands to mountain peaks. Mesa Verde National Park:
Located in Southwest Colorado,
Mesa Verde National Parkwas established in 1906 to preserve and interpret the archaeological heritage of the Ancestral Pueblo people. For over 700 years, the Ancestral Pueblo people built thriving communities on the mesas and in the cliffs of Mesa Verde. Today, the park protects the rich cultural heritage of 26 Pueblos and Tribes and offers visitors a spectacular window into the past while also highlighting contemporary connections. This World Heritage Site and International Dark Sky Park is home to over a thousand species, including several that live nowhere else on earth. Nearby Yucca House National Monument is managed under Mesa Verde. It is an undeveloped NPS unit and protects a large unexcavated valley pueblo.

On average Mesa Verde hosts 500,000+ visitors per year. Area residents and visitors enjoy world-class outdoor recreational opportunities including skiing, mountain biking, hiking, rafting, camping, hunting, and fishing in the region. Nearby public lands include the San Juan National Forest, Canyon of the Ancients National Monument and other areas in the Tres Rios District of the Bureau of Land Management. The local towns of Cortez, Mancos, Dolores, and Durango provide a range of housing, dining, and shopping opportunities, and both Durango and Cortez have regional airports. Mesa Verde and the nearby communities are great places to work and live.

  • You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work evenings, weekends, holidays and overtime.
  • If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
  • You may be required to travel overnight away from home on an occasional basis. You may be required to obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
  • Government Charge Card: You may be required to complete trianing and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
  • Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.
