The incumbent serves as the lead ecologist for Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument. The position is responsible for implementing and overseeing a long-term ecological monitoring program that includes wildlife biology, botany, physical sciences, and data management. Position is within the Organ Pipe Resource Management Division and is supervised by the Organ Pipe Resource Management Lead.
Develops long term ecological monitoring plans and protocols to guide park management. Utilizes a long term (>40 year) data set to create reports, publications, and presentations about park resources.
Based on results of research and monitoring, the incumbent develops and conducts scientifically credible protection, mitigation, and restoration projects needed to restore or maintain the integrity of native animal communities, critical habitat, and physical resources.
Represents the park on natural resources matters. Develops relationships with internal and external partners such as agency professionals, universities, tribal, and non-profit groups.
Identifies park research needs, prepares proposals or statements of work, and provides oversight for research projects. Serves as a park representative on contracts, grants, and agreements.
Supervises a group of resource professionals and technicians including two wildlife biologists, two botanists, one physical science/data manager, and various interns or seasonal employees.
Assists with natural resource environmental compliance such as NEPA, ESA Section 7, and Wilderness Administration.
Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.

You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
You may be required to work overtime.
If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 2 nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.

To qualify for this position at the GS-12 grade level, you must possess both of the following by close of the announcement:
BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Successful completion of a degree in biology, or a related field of science underlying ecological research that included at least 30 semester hours in basic and applied biological sciences. These hours must include at least 9 semester hours in ecology, and 12 semester hours in physical and mathematical sciences. You must submit your college transcripts with your application. ~AND~ EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-11 grade, or higher, level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: (1) Applies biology, resource management, ecology, or physical sciences, and skill to identify, define, and resolve programmatic, administrative, and scientific problems (2) provides park managers, staff and other agencies with sound science-based guidance (3) resolves novel, obscure, and sometimes controversial science based problems or develops and incorporates innovative approaches to advancing program goals (4) Advanced professional knowledge and skill in data analysis and synthesis to develop understanding of, and solutions to, natural resource problems. You must include hours per week worked. You must include hours per week worked on your resume.
Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Flying in fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters is possible.
