Help

  • Performing extensive carpentry on non-historic and historic structures according to federally defined guidelines.
  • Performing dock repairs as well as building new docks to include crib structures, shore connectors, bank retaining structures, and floating docks.
  • Performing trail clearing operations on land-based hiking trails, cross country ski trails, snowshoe trails, and snowmobile portage trail systems parkwide.
  • The incumbent will also be responsible for winter operations which will include grooming the land-based trail systems as well as the established ice-based trail systems by utilizing a snowmobile, a side-by-side with tracks, and the larger groomer with various drag attachments for each. Other duties will include working with staff with ice checking operations, plowing ice roads with a pickup truck and plow attachment, as well as snow removal at visitor centers walkways and parking lots parkwide.
  • Assisting shop mechanics with associated tasks related to services and repairs when requested. Delivering equipment to dealerships for warranty work and specialty services. Shuttling equipment and materials to various work sites within the park.
  • Assisting with the support of various utility operations and repairs as well as road repair projects.

  • This position is subject to drug testing based on the collateral duty requiring firearms in the back-country or other locations for non-law enforcement reasons such as protection from animals.
  • You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
  • You will be required to complete a one-year trial period.
  • Government Charge Card: You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
  • Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.
  • You will be required to operate a small water craft less than 26 feet in length and will be required to obtain a DOI-MOCC certificate.

Additional information

  • Voyageurs National Park is unique from other parks in that the operations between the summer and winter seasons are harshly extreme and temperatures can range from -40 to 100+F. Being a water-based park, there are logistical challenges due to the 220,000 square acres (nearly 350 square miles) which is about 40% covered by water. All of the 253 visitor campsites and houseboat sites are remotely located including back country campsites that are a several mile hike in the interior land mass of the Kabetogama Peninsula.
  • In the summer, boats and barges must be utilized on a daily basis to access these sites as well as several destination sites, a hotel concessionaire and a network of trail systems. All the campsites, trail heads and most of the destination sites have in ground hold tanks for toilets that require periodic pumping utilizing a septic pumper loaded onto a barge. These sites also include visitor amenities such as tent pads, picnic tables, fire rings, bear proof food storage, docks and historic structures, that require constant maintenance.
  • In the winter season, the operation transitions into accessing visitor use areas by utilizing snowmobiles, trail groomers and snow plowing trucks. The 3 visitor center areas must have snow consistently removed. There are several miles of cross-country ski trails and snowshoe trails which are accessed over the frozen lake. There are also about 26 miles of designated ice roads and 110 miles of snowmobile trails on the ice surface that require extensive ice checking and monitoring, plowing and grooming to ensure employee and visitor safety.

This announcement may be used to fill additional positions if identical vacancies occur within 90 days of the issue date of the referral certificate.

This is a term position (more than 1 year) with an initial appointment expecting to last at least 13 months but may be extended up to a total of four years, or more based on any changes to regulations governing the number of years term appointments may last, without further competition. Term positions do not convey permanent status in the Federal service.

The National Park Service retains the right to extend the duration of this appointment after selection and/or appointment, based on changes to the regulation governing the number of years term appointments may last. This change, which may be made at the agency's sole discretion and without further competition, shall not be construed or interpreted as the granting of a right to a selectee or employee to such an extension. No extension to a term appointment shall be granted to a selectee/employee to an amount of time that exceeds the maximum number of years authorized under any present or current regulation, unless such regulation expressly allows such action.

Physical Demands: Physical effort is heavy to moderate and requires occasional lifting or handling of objects or materials up to 50 pounds, unassisted, following proper lifting procedures to avoid injury. Frequently required to stand while working, climb ladders or scaffolding, and bend, stoop, climb, and work in awkward positions.

Working Conditions: Exposed to a variety of seasonal weather conditions while working outdoors (temperatures -40 to 90+ degrees). Subject to danger of falling from ladders or scaffolding. Exposed to dust, dirt, wind, and rain. May work with dangerous chemicals and around moving equipment, paints, solvents, etc. May be exposed to electrical shocks and biting insects.
