Summary

Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. MAJOR DUTIES:

  • Crew Leader - Provides daily direction and demonstrates proper historic trades work methods to at least three workers including answering questions, setting work pace, and reviewing work in progress. Maintains daily communication with Supervisor on project status and work crew.
  • Carpentry - Advanced knowledge and skill with traditional and historic craft skills, precision carpentry and woodworking equipment to construct and repair building frames, rafters, walls, staircases, door and window frames with precise fits, and accurate dimensions.
  • Masonry - Basic knowledge of the techniques and procedures of masonry work needed to replace missing or deteriorated mortar and loose stone work.
  • Historic Preservation - Assists with preparation of sketches, field reports, and condition assessments using digital cameras and computer software.
  • Painting - Basic knowledge and use of paints to match and replicate existing finishes.
A selectee receiving a first appointment to the Federal Government (Civil Service) is entitled only to the lowest step of the grade for which selected. The display of a salary range on this vacancy shall not be construed as granting an entitlement to a higher rate of pay.

You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • If you are a new employee in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
  • You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 14+ nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
  • Government Charge Card: You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
  • Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

A Relocation Incentive May Be Authorized for a Federal employee when the employee must move, as directed by the National Park Service (NPS) either through a management directed reassignment or selection for employment, to a different location at least 50 miles away from the one where his/her position of record held at time of selection is currently located, due to a need of the NPS. A relocation incentive is not the same as a Permanent Change of Station (PCS) move and, as such, may be granted in conjunction with one another.

Physical Demands: The physical effort required is considered heavy to moderate with considerable physical exertion related to actions such as lifting, pushing, pulling, or carrying objects of various sizes, weights, and shapes, and requires occasional lifting or handling of objects or materials over 100 lbs. while using the proper lifting procedures to avoid injury. The position requires frequent and considerable standing, stooping, lifting, and bending. Arm and back movement is considerable when nailing or using tools such as handsaws and planes. The incumbent is required to move hands, arms, feet, and legs when using hand and power tools, operative power equipment, and operating motor vehicles. Continued in "Next Steps."

Working Conditions: The incumbent performs work at a particular construction site or within a shop complex as assigned. The structures are often extremely deteriorated, structurally unsound and dirty and are therefore considered hazardous, requiring the use of protective equipment and clothing such as hard hats, safety toe boots, goggles, respirators, and ear protectors whether working indoors or out. Work is performed in all types of weather and is often executed in greasy, noisy, dirty, drafty, or otherwise unpleasant conditions. Much of the work is performed in unheated or uncooled structures and outdoors in temperatures that range from the 30s to oppressive heat in excess of 100 degrees. Other environmental factors such as stinging and biting insects, snakes, and poison plants can be encountered. The work often involves transport by boat, in adverse weather conditions. Travel to and from the Channel Islands requires riding on boats, fixed-wing aircraft or helicopter. Boat transportation involves transferring from a moving boat to a stationary pier and vice versa. Work on the Channel Islands requires overnight travel of up to 8 days at a time, living in remote locations with very limited services and amenities.

The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are NOT suitable for telework.
