Incumbents typical work assignments may include the following:

  • Performs installation, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of industrial electrical and electronic systems and equipment associated with underground buildings and structures and Class A power generating plants, primary and secondary distribution systems such as blast protection systems, electromagnetic pulse filters, ground fault sensing circuits.
  • Installs, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs high voltage electrical generating equipment and controls associated with a Class A power plant.
  • Performs work on high voltage equipment such as switchgear, vacuum and air circuit breakers, fuse cabinets, capacitors, contractors, motors, gang-operated switches, cutouts, lightning arrestors, generators and transformers (pad and pole mounted). Sometimes this work is performed on energized systems.
  • Stands watch with the Electric Power Controller in the power plant on a rotation shift basis. The prime responsibility is the servicing, switching and repair of all electrical equipment including multiple 1250 KVA generators, up to 200 horsepower motors, control circuits, feeder and branch circuits, signal devices, and other components associated with Class A Power Plant operations.

  • This position may require occasional travel away from the normal duty station

Qualifications

Your background must demonstrate a full range of performing the tasks of an High Voltage Electrician according to instructions given by a supervisor or leader. This includes installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing high voltage electrical generating equipment and controls associated with a Class A power plant.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the questions. The screen-out element for this position is Ability To Do The Work of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision.

JOB ELEMENTS: Those who meet the minimum level of experience and training for the screen-out element will then be evaluated in each of the following job elements:

  • Ability to use and maintain hand tools (electrical work)
  • Knowledge of electrical equipment
  • Ability to use electrical drawings
  • Knowledge of troubleshooting (electrical)

PHYSICAL EFFORT/REQUIREMENTS: Moderately heavy physical effort is exerted while working aloft, on poles, at ground level, and in ground trenches, or manholes; requiring bending, stooping, climbing, and standing for long periods. Coordination of eyes, hands, legs, and body are needed in repairing, installing, and testing electrical equipment in confined areas such as manholes and overhead structures.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is normally performed inside an underground facility with occasional exposure to outside environments. There is a hazard from exposure to high-noise levels, high voltages, electrical shocks and burns, and of cuts and bruises from hand and power tools. Subject to extremes of temperature and high humidity when working in air intake and exhaust chambers, and from working around operating equipment. Subject to serious injury or death by contact with high-voltage lines, or falls from poles, ladders, and less serious cuts and bruises when handling tools and materials.
