As a GS-09 Archeologist, the incumbent serves as a cultural resources specialist for Denali National Park and Preserve where archeological resources comprise a major part of the park story. Major duties will include:
Conducting archaeological field work in accordance with the Secretary of Interior Guidelines for Historic Preservation.
Writing technical reports based on archaeological findings and background research.
Using ArcGIS or similar computer mapping programs to process GPS data and create maps and working documents for reports.
Completing Determinations of Eligibility for the National Register of Historic Places (NR) for archeology sites.

This position is subject to drug testing based on the collateral duty requiring firearms in the back-country or other locations for non-law enforcement reasons such as protection from animals.

You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 10 nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
Must have ability to lift 50 pounds.
You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.

BASIC REQUIREMENT: To qualify for this position at the GS-09 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following basic requirements for the Archeology Series 0193:
Degree: Must have obtained the education described in A through C in this paragraph: (A) Bachelor or higher degree that includes 3 semester hours each in the following 5 course areas: 1) History of archaeology; 2) Archaeology of a major geographical area such as North America or Africa; 3) Regional archaeology, archaeological cultures, or sites in a specific part or portion of a major geographical area to acquire or develop a foundation for regional specialization for professional development; 4) Theory and methods of archaeology. Methods include, but are not limited to, typology, classification, sampling, cultural evolution, diffusion, dating and analytical techniques; 5) Archaeological field school, to provide a basic understanding of theoretical and practical approaches to research design implementation, field preservation techniques, and report preparation by participation in actual field work. (B) IN ADDITION, I have taken six semester hours of related course work in: geography, geology, or cultural geography; history, historiography, or historical archaeology; environmental studies; scientific writing (nonfiction English composition); and/or surveying; (C) AND I have completed archaeological field school. You must include a copy of your transcripts. - OR -
Related Curriculum: Must have a degree in a related curriculum: Degree in anthropology (with emphasis on ethnology, physical anthropology, or scientific linguistics), history, American studies, or a related discipline may be accepted as satisfying in full the educational requirements, provided the curriculum supplied academic course work sufficiently similar to the requirements stated above, including archaeological field school. You must include a copy of your transcripts. - OR - Combination of Education and Experience: Must have a combination of college-level education or training that provided knowledge equivalent to that described above, plus appropriate technical experience or additional education. You must include a copy of your transcripts and hours worked per week. - OR - Experience: Must have four years of archaeological work experience that demonstrated a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional archaeology. The work experience must have included archaeology field experience, which may include that gained in an archaeological field school. Field experience should have included a combination of professional experience in archaeological survey, excavation, laboratory analysis, and preparation of written materials. Applicants with such field experience should, after additional experience under the direction of a higher-grade archaeologist, be able to demonstrate the ability to be a crew chief, directing the work of others at a single location as a part of a larger archaeological project. You must include hours worked per week.

In addition to meeting at least one of the basic requirements listed above, to qualify for this position at the GS-09 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: (1) conducting archeological site inventories and cataloging; (2) photographing artifacts for curation and produces quality photographs for report publications; (3) preparing archeological survey and excavation reports; (4) using Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) to record archeological site and features; and conducting Section 106 inventory and monitoring projects. You must include hours worked per week.
-OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least two years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree. This education must be directly related to the position being filled. You must include transcripts. -OR-

Physical Demands: The position may require strenuous physical activity including periods of standing, walking, climbing, and lifting and carrying heavy objects. Some activities will occur in physically dangerous areas or settings. Documentary research and report writing work are sedentary, which entails the ability to concentrate and write for long periods of time
Working Conditions: Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather. Assignments may be performed in potentially hazardous areas including steep slopes, rocky terrain, volcanoes, caves, firelines, arctic environments, swamps, deserts, and forests. Flying in fixed-winged aircraft and helicopters is possible.
The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval.
Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will not be paid. All travel, transportation, and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the sole responsibility of the selected employee.
