Duties

Help
  • Duties will be developmental in nature when filled below the full performance level.
  • Work as an Engineering Technician in a variety of work situations aligned with and/or supporting professional engineering and architecture fields.
  • Specialization of technical engineering work may include architecture, civil, drafting, electrical, materials, and mechanical.
  • Gather data for evaluation from a variety of sources, including databases, field notes, maps, land classification resources, environmental analyses, geotechnical reports, design charrettes, laboratory reports, and reports.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience. If qualifying based on education, a copy of your unofficial transcripts must be provided with your application.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
To be considered minimally qualified for this position, you must demonstrate that you have the required specialized experience and/or education for the respective grade level in which you are applying:

Specialized Experience GS-07: Applicants must have one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service (obtained either in the private or public sectors) performing the following: (1) conducting technical engineering evaluations; (2) drafting technical documentation for engineering work assignments; (3) using databases to maintain engineering data and records.
OR,
Education GS-07:
Successful completion of at least one full year (18 semester hours) of graduate level education in an appropriate field of study such as engineering, construction, or industrial technology, construction, physics, drafting, surveying, physical science or mathematics.
OR,
Combination GS-07:
An equivalent combination of specialized experience and graduate level education as described above, when combined, equal 100% of the total requirement.

Specialized Experience GS-08: Applicants must have one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service (obtained either in the private or public sectors) performing the following: (1) conducting technical engineering evaluation and analysis assignments; (2) drafting technical documentation for engineering work assignments; (3) performing quality assurance and data integrity review of electronic data and records.
OR,
Education GS-08: Successful completion of at least two full years (36 semester hours) of graduate level education leading to a master's or a completed master's degree in an appropriate field of study such as engineering, engineering or industrial technology, construction, physics, drafting, surveying, physical science or mathematics.
OR,
Combination GS-08:
An equivalent combination of specialized experience and graduate level education as described above, when combined, equal 100% of the total requirement.

Specialized Experience GS-09: Applicants must have one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-08 grade level in the Federal service (obtained either in the private or public sectors) performing the following: (1) conducting difficult but precedented technical engineering evaluation and analysis assignments; (2) analyzing engineering issues and project objectives; (3) making adjustments to standard procedures or operations based on situations encountered in the field or during the study.

Education GS-09: Successful completion of at least two full years (36 semester hours) of graduate level education leading to a master's or a completed master's degree in an appropriate field of study such as engineering, engineering or industrial technology, construction, physics, drafting, surveying, physical science or mathematics.
OR,
Combination GS-09:
An equivalent combination of specialized experience and graduate level education as described above, when combined, equal 100% of the total requirement.

One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. Part-time hours are prorated. You will not receive any credit for experience that does not indicate exact hours per week or is listed as "varies".

Education

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.

GRADUATE EDUCATION: One academic year of graduate education is considered to be the number of credits hours your graduate school has determined to represent one academic year of full-time study. Such study may have been performed on a full-time or part-time basis. If you cannot obtain your graduate school's definition of one year of graduate study, 18 semester hours (or 27 quarter hours) should be considered as satisfying the requirement for one year of full-time graduate study.

Additional information

  • Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
  • You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 5 nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
  • Promotion to the full performance level is neither guaranteed nor implied and will be based solely on your ability to satisfactorily perform the work of the position, existing work at the higher grade level, and recommendation by the position's supervisor.
Physical Demands: The work is primarily sedentary, although there is some walking in offices, production areas, utility plants, maintenance, and work areas. Work may involve carrying lightweight items, such as briefcases, notebooks, test equipment, and work papers or may involve operating a motor vehicle. The work does not require any special physical effort or ability.

Working Conditions: The work area is usually an office setting adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated. The work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts requiring normal safety precautions.
