Summary

Serve as a Maintenance Worker on the Branch of Roads, Trails & Landscapes team at VAFO in the Maintenance Division. Primary purpose of this position is to perform various laboring & maintenance tasks in connection with maintaining the 3,500 acres of the park, operate motor vehicles less than 26,000 GVW & operating light, industrial & farm tractors up to 40 HP. During the off-season, the employee may be assigned to the Buildings & Utilities Unit to assist with building maintenance projects.

CAREER SEASONAL: This is a Career-Seasonal position and subject to release and recall procedures. A permanent career-seasonal position includes all the benefits of permanent employment but does not provide employment on a full year-round basis. Non-pay/non-duty status for 2 weeks-6 months/year based on projects or weather. Guaranteed work at least 6 months/year but not more than 50 weeks/year. The typical non-pay status is March - November but can be variable due to project requirements or weather conditions.

  • Perform grounds maintenance activities such as mowing, weed whacking, planting trees and shrubs using various hand tools and mechanical equipment.
  • Perform snow removal activities using shovels, snow blowers, plows and other mechanical equipment.
  • Perform tree removal and pruning. Includes hazard tree removal. Methods include hand tools and chain saws. Chainsaw Safety, Maintenance and Operation (CSMO) training will be provided.
  • Perform hardscaping earth work to include grading roads, filling potholes, repairing concrete. Also includes clearing drainage pipes and gulleys.
  • Perform trail maintenance including grading, repairing water bars, tree pruning and removal, flashing trails and improving water runoff.

You will also submit a photocopy of your valid State issued driver's license prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year, or more frequently if management determines such need exists. Lastly, you may be required to submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.   • Driver's License: You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
  • Vehicle Operation: You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle.
  • Uniform: You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • Work Schedule: You may be required to work overtime.
  • Probationary Period: If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:

  • Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment

SCREEN OUT: Have experience that includes independently performing the following duties: operating gasoline vehicles such as powered trucks, farm tractors, and light industrial tractors with attachments; AND caring for and maintaining lawns, trees, and/or outdoor grounds; AND minor duties in at least three of the carpentry, plumbing, electrical, painting, or masonry trades to construct, repair, restore buildings, fences, picnic areas, etc.; AND janitorial work.

Physical Effort
Considerable physical effort is required to operate tractors, vehicles, equipment and tools on a daily basis throughout the year. This position is expected to be capable of accomplishing the work supervised. He/she is required to perform light to heavy physical labor. Constant physical strength, effort, and coordination are required in continuously reaching, bending, turning and climbing, along with lifting and carrying heavy objects weighing approximately 50 pounds. Considerable strain and fatigue are caused by constant noise and vibration of equipment and tools as well as the jerking and jolting from working on uneven, rough terrain while performing snow removal, mowing and tree work operations. The incumbent is required to stand, stoop, lift, and walk significant distances to inspect job sites.

Working Conditions
Working conditions vary from a heated interior shop space to extended periods of time out of doors with exposure to high humidity and temperatures ranging from -10 to 105 degrees Fahrenheit. Conditions may be slick, dirty, and dusty. The incumbent experiences noise and vibrations during the operation of equipment and is exposed to pesticides during pesticide application. Other possible hazards include equipment overturning or dropping into holes, insect stings or bites, poisonous plants, high noise levels, dust, and fumes. The incumbent may be required to work long days (>10 hours) and a seven-day work week during emergency situations such as snowstorms, floods, high windstorms, or other environmental conditions that adversely affect the park.
