These are term positions (more than 1 year) with an initial appointment expecting to last at least 13 months but may be extended up to a total of four years, or more based on any changes to regulations governing the number of years term appointments may last, without further competition. Term positions do not convey permanent status in the Federal service.

The National Park Service retains the right to extend the duration of this appointment after selection and/or appointment, based on changes to the regulation governing the number of years term appointments may last. This change, which may be made at the agency's sole discretion and without further competition, shall not be construed or interpreted as the granting of a right to a selectee or employee to such an extension. No extension to a term appointment shall be granted to a selectee/employee to an amount of time that exceeds the maximum number of years authorized under any present or current regulation, unless such regulation expressly allows such action.

This position serves as a non-supervisory Park Ranger within the Visitor and Resource Protection Division of Mount Rainier National Park, with a duty station of Longmire. The Division performs a variety of tasks associated with the use, management, and protection of park visitors and resources located in both the front-country and back-country areas of the park. This position performs duties designed to: (1) facilitate visitor understanding and enjoyment of the park and its resources, (2) promote safety both for park visitors and employees during winter operations, (3) promote compliance with the laws, rules and policy for safe use of the park resources, and (4) perform, teach, and implement All Hazard Operations, Emergency Response, and EMS concurrent with current techniques and practices. Park housing may be available in the areas of Longmire or Ashford.

Longmire: Longmire is located approximately 2 hours south of Seattle, near the communities of Ashford and Elbe. Both are very small rural communities of several hundred people, with convenience stores, gas, church, and a highly rated elementary school (K-6). Eatonville (32 miles from Longmire) and Morton are both larger rural communities of several thousand people and have a wider variety of services (doctor, dentist, banks, grocery stores, pharmacy, movie theater, etc.). Complete shopping, hospitals, and post-high school education options are available in Puyallup or Tacoma, approximately 60 miles away.

Summers are typically mild, with temperatures in the 70's and 80's, with short periods of higher heat. The months of July and August are typically dry, while Spring and Fall can be rainy and cool. Winters are mild in temperature, rarely falling below 15 degrees F, with frequent rain and snow and occasional storms. Opportunities for all types of outdoor recreation abound in the National Park and surrounding state and federal lands.
