As a Supervisory Hydrologist (Director, Office of Planning and Programs) for the Water Mission Area in the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), some of your specific duties will include:
Responsible for the management and execution of Federal Appropriations of the programs in the Water Mission Area (WMA).
Develops and implements programs and scientific objectives within the context of broader USGS goals and priorities.
Responsible for executive leadership and direction in the planning, development and implementation of nationwide natural science and information programs in the WMA.
Coordinates the scientific activities and programs within the WMA by ensuring that team members are working toward common goals and objectives.
Participates in program or Mission Area reviews and analyzes the effectiveness of programs at multiple levels, offering alternatives for monitoring programs to ensure the accomplishment of Bureau strategic goals.
Serves as the liaison for science program initiatives across the bureau and maintains strong working relationships with the highest levels of management in the bureau, the Department of the Interior, other Federal, State, or local government.
Selectee may be subject to serving a one-year probationary period.
This position requires completion of a one year supervisory probationary period, if one has not previously been completed.

Qualifications
BASICEDUCATIONREQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Hydrologist, all grade levels.
A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in physical or natural science, or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses in hydrology, the physical sciences, geophysics, chemistry, engineering science, soils, mathematics, aquatic biology, atmospheric science, meteorology, geology, oceanography, or the management or conservation of water resources. The course work must have included at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in calculus (including both differential and integral calculus), and at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in physics. **OR
B. A combination of education and experience-course work as shown in "A" above (30 semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses as specified in "A" above which must include at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in calculus (including both differential and integral calculus), and at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in physics), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above. In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must have one year of appropriate professional experience in hydrology that is equivalent to at least the GS-14 level in the Federal service.
Examples of such experience may include: 1) Developing and coordinating short term and long-term priorities and determines resource requirements to achieve them; 2) applying principals, methods, or tools for scheduling, coordinating, monitoring, evaluating, and managing projects and resources, including technical performance; 3) resolving critical problems resulting from the unprecedented complexities of a multi-discipline scientific study; or 4) serving as the principal contact with other Federal agencies, state and local government organizations, and other groups that may affect the success of a major interdisciplinary scientific program. The work involved advising or counseling other recognized senior technical experts.
