Duties

Help

As a Physical Scientist, at minimum you will:
  • Serve as a principal advisor to EERE management on a broad range of topics related to decarbonization of the transportation sector, including cross-sector interactions with the power and buildings sectors.
  • Serve as the point person within Strategic Analysis for coordinating analysis activities with the Sustainable Transportation and Fuels Technology Offices, and transportation and fuels linkages with other Offices.
  • Design, plan, implement, and monitor a portfolio of analysis projects-in collaboration with the Technology Offices-to inform EERE's RD&D strategy for transportation decarbonization across all transportation modes, including on-road vehicles, off-road vehicles, rail, marine, and air transport, as well as the use of hydrogen and sustainable fuels across sectors.
  • Develop and communicate technical content that guides and explains the Strategic Analysis portfolio and the connection to the EERE mission. (e.g., writing reports for internal or external publication, memos and presentations for briefing leadership, and presentations for external audiences).
  • Develop, review, implement, and manage projects undertaken by laboratories, universities, industry, non-profits, and other stakeholders.
  • Provide regulatory review for interagency transportation-related regulations..

Qualifications

You must meet both the Basic Requirement and the Specialized Experience to qualify for this series as described below.

BASIC REQUIREMENT
A. Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.

OR

B. Combination of education and experience: education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for these positions are defined as:

GS-14: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS-13). Specialized experience for this position is defined as meeting 2 out of 3 of the following:
  • Developing, conducting, and publishing analysis in the transportation and fuels production sectors, transportation and fuels policy, and/or transportation or fuels regulatory issues;
  • Providing analysis of interactions between the transportation and fuels production sectors and at least one other energy sector (e.g., transportation and power-sector interactions, transportation-building interactions, fuels and industry interactions);
  • Authored publications in one of the following fields, (transportation and power-sector interactions, transportation-building interactions, fuels and industry interactions)

NOTE: There is no substitution of education for specialized experience.

Examples of qualifying unpaid experience may include: volunteer work done through National Service programs (such as Peace Corps and AmeriCorps); as well as work for other community-based philanthropic and social organizations. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills; and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
