The major duties of the Hydrologist GS-1315-12 position include, but are not limited to, the following:
Leads, designs, and conducts comprehensive hydrogeologic investigations including quantitative analyses of complex issues involving the effects of groundwater development on park water rights and groundwater dependent ecosystems.
Provides service-wide expertise and leadership in groundwater hydrology, subsurface flow and transport, groundwater - surface water interaction, aquifer and well evaluation, groundwater modeling, and groundwater chemistry in support of acquiring and protecting park water rights and otherwise securing water resources.
Acts as a groundwater hydrology liaison between the NPS other federal agencies such as the US Geological Survey, US Bureau of Reclamation, US Fish and Wildlife Service, Bureau of Land Management, US Forest Service, and experts in academia, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector.
Assists with WRB/WRD responses to requests for input on policy development and requests for technical and scientific assistance related developing and interpreting NPS water-related policies.
Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.

Qualifications

SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR:
To qualify for the Hydrologist GS-1315-12 position, you must possess all of the following selective placement factors by close of the announcement:
Knowledge and ability to correctly evaluate/determine aquifer characteristics such as K, T, s, b, n, Ss, Sy and similar parameters.
Knowledge and ability to review and critique finite difference and finite element groundwater flow models.

To qualify for the Hydrology 1315 job series, you must possess one of the following basic qualifications by close of the announcement:
Education: A degree in physical or natural science, or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in any combination of courses in hydrology, the physical sciences, geophysics, chemistry, engineering science, soils, mathematics, aquatic biology, atmospheric science, meteorology, geology, oceanography, or the management or conservation of water resources. The course work must have included at least 6 semester hours in calculus (including both differential and integral calculus), and at least 6 semester hours in physics. You must include your transcripts; or,
Combination of education and experience: Must include course work as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Acceptable experience must have included performance of scientific functions related to the study of water resources, based on and requiring a professional knowledge of related sciences and the consistent application of basic scientific principles to the solution of theoretical and practical hydrologic problems. The following is illustrative of acceptable experience: field or laboratory work that would require application of hydrologic theory and related sciences such as geology, geo-chemistry, geophysics, or civil engineering to making observations, taking samples, operating instruments, assembling data from source materials, analyzing and interpreting data, and reporting findings orally and in writing. In some cases, professional scientific experience that is not clearly water resource experience may be acceptable if such experience was preceded by appropriate education in hydrology or by professional hydrology experience. You must include transcripts. Your resume must include hours worked per week.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
To qualify for this position at the GS-12 grade level, you must possess the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: (1) leading and conducting comprehensive hydrogeologic investigations including quantitative analyses of complex issues involving the effects of groundwater development on park water rights and groundwater dependent ecosystems, (2) providing expertise and leadership in groundwater hydrology, subsurface flow and transport, groundwater ? surface water interaction, aquifer evaluation and well hydraulics, groundwater modeling, and geochemistry in support of acquiring and protecting park water rights, (3) making recommendations to management for dealing with unique and important water supply and groundwater issues of national significance, (4) providing technical assistance for groundwater supply project design and technical review, and (5) assisting technical teams in addressing emergency groundwater-related projects and/or complex issues involving impacts to aquatic resources of national significance. You must include hours per week worked.
Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
You must include months, years and hours per week worked to receive credit for your work and/or volunteer experience. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. Part-time hours are prorated. You will not receive any credit for experience that does not indicate exact hours per week or is listed as "varies". Experience listed as full-time will be credited at 40 hours per week.
Education

Physical Demands: The work regularly combines both office and field assignments. Field work requires physical exertion, such as long periods of standing, or recurring and considerable walking, stooping, bending, crouching, crawling, and climbing such as in regular and periodic construction activities and field inspections. Work may also include frequent lifting of moderately heavy items weighing less than 50 pounds. Field assignments may also involve operating small watercraft, driving motor vehicles to work sites, some of which may be remote, and include overnight stays in remote locations.
Working Conditions: The work involves regular and recurring exposure to moderate risks, discomforts, and unpleasantness such as: high noise levels, infectious materials, or toxic or irritating chemicals; travel in safety approved small aircraft and water craft; high winds and low or high temperatures; infestation of dangerous reptiles or poisonous plants, snakes, or insects; adverse weather conditions; noxious fumes; flammable liquids; or radiation. The work involves performing tasks in close proximity to rotating heavy mechanical and electrical machinery and may involve working within confined spaces for extensive periods of time. Safety precautions and protocols are observed at all times and the scientist complies with safety instructions and regulations and ensures individual and others' safety by promptly reporting unsafe acts, unsafe conditions, and accidents to the supervisor.
