This position is with the Natural Sounds & Night Skies Division of the National Park Service Natural Resource Stewardship & Science Directorate. This position provides Service-wide technical guidance and assistance to the Division Chief and the Directorate regarding the measurement of light at night, the effects of artificial light on park resources, options for mitigation of light pollution, and other matters related to the protection of the overall photic environment of park units.
Summary
This position is with the Natural Sounds & Night Skies Division of the National Park Service Natural Resource Stewardship & Science Directorate. This position provides Service-wide technical guidance and assistance to the Division Chief and the Directorate regarding the measurement of light at night, the effects of artificial light on park resources, options for mitigation of light pollution, and other matters related to the protection of the overall photic environment of park units.
The major duties of the Physical Scientist (Photometry) position include, but are not limited to, the following:
Develops and applies scientific and technical expertise on light pollution, and its impact upon park resources and values, and mitigation techniques.
Utilizes knowledge of mathematics, statistics, physics, photometry, and/or remote sensing, to follow established measurement protocols, deploy instruments for monitoring resource conditions, analyze imagery, and report on findings.
Utilizes skills in scripting, programming, image analysis, and spatial statistics to develop automated processes in Geographic Information Systems, image processing software, and reduce large databases.
In cooperation with staff, tests novel instruments (CCD/CMOS sensors, photo sensors, and other optical tools) and methods for documenting resource conditions. Maintains electronic and optical equipment, performs regular calibration, and is primarily responsible for laboratory space.
Presents data and communicates scientific information to achieve large-landscape conservation and foster support from wide audiences. Assists with the delivery and coordination of training, and briefs park management staff.
Duties will be developmental in nature when filled below the full performance level.

Basic Requirements
Degree: Physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics. ***You must include transcripts.***-OR-

Additional information

Physical Demands: The work is approximately 90% in a relatively sedentary office setting, and 10% in field locations that may demand substantial physical effort. Field work requires traveling long distances in aircraft, trucks, and boats to reach National Park sites, and extensive hiking, skiing, or snowshoeing to survey backcountry areas and place equipment during nighttime hours. Backcountry operations often require coping with wet or uneven ground and rugged terrain. Familiarity and facility with route selection and backcountry navigation are important. Equipment installation will require lifting heavy objects (up to 60 pounds), bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, and reaching. The work requires above-average agility and dexterity. Backcountry access may require travel by watercraft (canoe, river raft).
Working Conditions: The office work will be in a well-maintained indoor setting (adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated). Laboratory studies may involve work in specialized facilities and extensive use of tools. Backcountry work may involve high risks of exposure to unusual or potentially dangerous environmental conditions; this will vigilance, composure, and balanced assessments of risk and opportunity. Specialized equipment or safety precautions will need to be anticipated for each field deployment. The employee is expected to conduct duties in a safe end orderly manner so as not to endanger self, fellow workers, property, or park resources.
