Incumbents typical work assignments may include the following:

  • Monitors, operates, maintains, makes repairs to uninterruptable power supplies (UPSs), power distribution units (PDUs), and Building Generator Systems. Systems are diesel powered electric generators ranging from 6 KW to 2 MW, 110/240 volt portable light carts to 13,800 volt 3 phase alternating current systems.
  • Performs routine and special generator plant maintenance; cleans and adjusts generating units and all auxiliary equipment including ventilating fans and systems, changes air cleaner elements, cleans crankcase breathers, lubricates bearings, changes coolant in cooling systems, tests and adds corrosion inhibitors; adjusts and calibrates regulators, governors, circuit breakers, overload devices and switchgear.
  • Performs major and minor repairs to generating plant equipment, auxiliary equipment including ventilating systems, fans, oil distribution and transfer systems, and distribution systems the need for which is indicated by tests and examinations.
  • Starts and places generators in service as required by the demand for power; adjusting voltage regulators, equalizing the phase voltage, synchronizing the generators , adjusting governors, and closing the circuit breakers.
  • Examining and testing fuel, storage tanks, and supply lines and pump systems; gauges, indicators, and meters, etc.

To qualify for the WG-11 level your background must demonstrate the full range of your ability toperform common Electric Power Controller tasks under normal supervision and independently in some cases, such as: monitoring, operating, maintaining and repairing uninterruptable power supplies (UPSs), power distribution units (PDUs), and building generator systems that are diesel powered electric generators ranging from 6 KW to 2 MW, 110/240 volt portable light carts to 13,800 volt 3 phase alternating current systems.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. JOB ELEMENTS: Those who meet the minimum level of experience and training for the screen-out element will then be evaluated in each of the following job elements:

  • Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc.
  • Operation of Generators
  • Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic)
PHYSICAL EFFORT/REQUIREMENTS: For short periods of time pulling and tugging tools is required. Regular standing, stooping, and reaching are required in servicing this equipment. Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed in a well heated, lighted, ventilated area except for that time when diesel engines are in operation and discharge fumes are not fully removed by the exhaust system. The environment is hazardous the high noise levels, live electrical equipment, and moving parts on the engines and the generators. Subject to call on a 24- hour basis and rotation to any of the three shifts on a forty-hour, five day week. When work is being performed in an asbestos containment area, special precautions must be taken. These include but are not limited to following the guidelines for working above ceilings and for wearing of protective equipment; i.e. tyvek suits and respirators. Protective equipment is required while working with other hazards as well.
