Summary

This position is part of the Deputy Administrator for Naval Reactors, Department of Energy.

The Deputy Administrator for NR is also the Director of the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program and the Deputy Commander, Naval Nuclear Propulsion Directorate, Naval Sea Systems Command. Responsibilities for this Program area are contained in Executive Order 12344 of 1 February 1982, which is codified in 42 U.S.C. §7158 and 50 U.S.C. §§ 2401 and 2406.

Duties

Help

As a Nuclear Engineer (Director, Environmental, Health, and Safety), you will:

  • Serve as the Director, Environment, Safety & Health.
  • Be responsible for the prescription and enforcement of standards and regulations for occupational safety and industrial health activities that cover the health and safety of workers, Naval personnel, and the general public, and ensuring compliance with all applicable environmental laws and regulations.
  • Provide management and technical oversight for the environmental, safety, and occupational health (ESH) program at the two Naval Reactors reactor design laboratories and the land-based nuclear prototype training site and Moored Training Ship site.
  • Review and evaluate reported ESH problems at all operating and maintenance organization of the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program world-wide.
  • Conducts ESH inspections of laboratories, land-based prototypes, the Naval Reactors Facility, and Moored Training Ships, to ensure compliance with established ESH regulations.
  • Provides technical program management for the Lead Shipyard for Mix Material as the Program expert on mixed material.
  • Prepares and issues detailed manuals defining the occupational safety and health specifications and procedures for Naval Reactors prototypes, Naval Reactors Facility and Program DOE facilities for supporting nuclear powered ships.
  • Perform supervisory duties.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-15 or equivalent) in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position is defined as:

Extensive experience and knowledge of nuclear engineering, to include: administering and regulating a broad program of occupational, safety, occupational health, and non-nuclear emergency preparedness associated with laboratory operations and the operation and repair of naval nuclear propulsion plants.

Education

There is no substitution for education at the EN-5 level.

You must provide transcripts to support your educational claims. Education must be accredited by an accrediting institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS FOR ENGINEER:

  • Bachelor's Degree (or higher) in Engineering OR
  • Successful completion of a curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree in an appropriate professional field, provided you have had at least 1 year of professional engineering experience acquired under professional engineering supervision and guidance. OR
  • Successful completion of at least 60 semester hours of courses in the physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences and in engineering that included the courses specified in the basic requirements. The courses must be fully acceptable toward meeting the requirements of a professional engineering curriculum. OR
  • Current registration as a Professional Engineer by any State, the District of Columbia, Guam, or Puerto Rico allows eligibility only if your registration is within or closely related to nuclear engineering.
