Summary

This position is part of the Office of Science - Headquarters, Department of Energy. As a Geologist, you will serve as a recognized expert and technical authority in geosciences and will develop and implement program thrusts that complement current Office research activities as well as interface with other core research areas within the Division including catalysis, separation science, heavy element chemistry, and condensed phase and interfacial science.

Duties

Help

As a Geologist, you will:

  • Serve as a recognized scientific authority in geosciences (geochemistry and geophysics) and as such have the responsibility to plan, coordinate, implement, and evaluate research programs in this field on a national and international level.
  • Develop connections between the geosciences research program and others throughout the SC and DOE including new opportunities and challenges for study of geochemistry, geophysics, and geomaterials involving the use of Office x-ray light sources and neutron scattering facilities, nanoscience research centers, ultrafast photon science capabilities, and supercomputer capabilities.
  • Serve as an expert and consultant to other geologists and senior management in areas of assigned responsibility.
  • Consult and negotiate with leading government and scientific personnel, both nationally and internationally, on sensitive issues and complex areas of importance to all involved parties.
  • Examine and ascertain research needs and opportunities of the research program against scientific and technological advances and of potential needs of the DOE.

Qualifications

BASIC REQUIREMENT:

A. Degree: geology, plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological science, structural, chemical, civil, mining or petroleum engineering, computer science, planetary geology, comparative planetology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology, and cartography.

OR

B. Combination of education and experience -- course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In addition to meeting the basic education requirement above, you must meet the experience requirement below:

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS GS-14:
A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position is defined as meeting all of the following:

  1. Providing guidance to scientific staff and stakeholders about sensitive matters related to research and scientific projects.
  2. Identifying research requirements and capitalizing on possibilities to enhance the scientific and technological community.
  3. Assessing the merit of scientific research projects.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS GS-15: A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position is defined as meeting all of the following:

  1. Creating analytical documentation to effectively convey the current state of scientific initiatives.
  2. Engaging in geoscience research to disseminate findings through publishing in peer-reviewed journals.
  3. Evaluating the progress of geoscience research initiatives.
There is no education substitution for this series and grade.
